In the world of international HR, Vladimir (Vlad) Dziak, Ph.D., GPHR, SPHRi, is a leader who has effectively leveraged HRCI certifications to navigate and excel in global HR management. With a strong background in global talent management, Vlad shares how dual certifications from HRCI have contributed to his professional growth, enabling him to address complex HR issues across various national contexts.
Why did you choose HRCI as your career partner, and what was your journey to becoming dual certified?
I sought a reliable career partner that could support my global certification journey while helping me grow my knowledge, skills, and most importantly, my network of top-notch global specialists. With over 15 years of experience in global talent management, I have spent my career addressing issues related to workforce mobility and the unique challenges each country presents for international operations. The GPHR and SPHRi certifications perfectly aligned with my professional needs.
The GPHR equipped me with essential technical knowledge within a global context, enabling me to navigate international HR practices relevant to multinational corporations. In contrast, the SPHRi deepened my understanding of strategic operations at an advanced level, particularly in the US and UK markets.
HRCI has been an invaluable certification partner, enabling me to continuously expand my knowledge through courses, webinars, and publications. I was recently promoted, and I attribute part of this advancement to the credibility and recognition that the global HRCI certifications brought to my role. They demonstrated to my senior leadership team that I have not only elevated my own capabilities but also the role itself through the insights and knowledge I contribute, all of which are grounded in HRCI’s accredited certifications.
I strongly recommend that HR professionals begin with the certification tailored to their specific needs—whether that's practical advice, skill enhancement, or networking. HRCI offers a wealth of resources beyond certification, and understanding how to leverage these tools can significantly enhance one’s career.
If you asked me 15+ years ago when I first started, I would have emphasized the importance of developing strong soft skills: interpersonal communication, active listening, and empathy. These qualities are essential in traditional HR roles where interaction with employees at all levels is crucial. However, given the significant transformations in the HR field, it’s equally important to grasp foundational principles and emerging trends, particularly those supported by data. I believe that formal education is vital, enabling even junior HR professionals to apply innovation, data, and technology effectively.
"Giving back" has been a pivotal aspect of my journey. Initially, I participated in various conferences, sharing my experiences and networking. Over time, I realized I could contribute even more significantly as a subject-matter expert (SME) for HRCI, where I work with other HR professionals to create relevant exam content that shapes our industry.
The certifications and SME opportunities I’ve pursued have led to multiple professional connections globally. When faced with questions or challenges, I often reach out to friends I've made through this network, which has fostered lasting friendships. Conversely, I find myself mentoring colleagues who are eager to advance their careers in the global HR space.
Since becoming certified, HRCI has significantly accelerated my career. The extended knowledge I gained through my HRCI certifications have enhanced my ability to understand the changing needs of the business landscape. This insight has enabled me to propose effective solutions that address specific organizational challenges.
I view HRCI as an ongoing career partner, helping me continuously grow my knowledge and skills through its offerings. Being part of a network filled with some of the brightest HR professionals globally allows me to collaborate on innovative initiatives, which I can then bring back to my business stakeholders.
I anticipate that HR transformation will accelerate, driven by technology and AI. Understanding how these trends will fundamentally alter the HR profession, as well as the new skills required, will be essential.
Thrilling: The areas of global talent, workforce deployment, and mobility are particularly thrilling to me. This field transcends boundaries, offering access to diverse talent and opportunities regardless of geographical limitations. It is one of the most complex yet rewarding areas of HR, as it involves strategic planning and long-term goals across multiple jurisdictions, while also engaging with the entire employee lifecycle.
