Happy Pride Month! As you may already know, Pride started as a way to honor the 1969 Stonewall Riots, primarily seen as the catalyst for the gay rights movement in the U.S. Over the years, Pride has expanded, becoming symbolic of a larger initiative to achieve equal opportunity and equal justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, persons of color, and more. Unfortunately, several emerging and recently enacted laws threaten these communities, making Pride all the more important to talk about – especially among HR professionals.
Pride directly correlates with diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging – a topic we take very seriously at HRCI and HRSI. As Stephanie Runyan, PHR, Senior Director of Learning at HRCI, once wrote, “Company culture impacts every aspect of your business, and inclusion is the bedrock of positive company culture.” And the key to making an inclusive culture a reality for any organization is recognizing and respecting the identities of your employees. To help you accomplish this, we offer the following:
HRCI Certificate in D&I for HR Management – This individual certification includes coursework around fostering an inclusive culture, assessing diversity and inclusion, and hiring and retaining talent.
HRSI D&I Organizational Certification – For whole organizations, this certification helps create workplaces where people feel significant and empowered, in line with ISO standard 30415:2021.
Pride might seem like a big, bright, colorful celebration, but it started as an uprising. A battle that’s been long fought by the members of these communities and continues to this day. As HR professionals, offering support by learning or even just listening helps show allyship and promote inclusion in and around the workplace. I hope you will consider the difference you can make this month and all year.
Keep on Learning,
