I chose HRCI as my career partner because it is the global standard in HR certifications. I’ve always believed that staying ahead in this field means constantly sharpening my knowledge, and earning the PHR, the PHRca, and ultimately the SPHR, has helped me do that.
California employment law is layered, intricate, and constantly evolving. I wanted to ensure my guidance wasn’t just compliant but proactive, too, and the PHRca certification gave me the depth of knowledge needed to navigate the state's legal landscape with confidence.
Soon after obtaining my PHRca certification, I led the transition from a 403(b) retirement plan to a 401(k) plan—an intricate process with significant compliance risks and potential challenges for both the organization and employees. California’s strict wage and hour laws, along with unique regulatory requirements, made this transition particularly complex.
Leveraging my PHRca expertise, I confidently navigated the legal and administrative hurdles. I collaborated with legal counsel, payroll providers, and benefits administrators to mitigate risks and align our approach with California’s labor laws. My certification not only deepened my understanding of these complexities but also empowered me to proactively anticipate compliance issues, communicate effectively with employees, and executing a seamless transition while maintaining trust and transparency.
My PHRca certification has significantly shaped my approach to policy development by ensuring every HR policy remains compliant and adapts to evolving California employment laws. My knowledge of California laws allows me to structure policies that address key areas where state requirements differ from federal standards, including wage and hour laws, harassment prevention, and job classifications.
By staying ahead of legislative changes, I provide leadership with strategic, proactive policy updates that reduce compliance risks and foster a workplace culture that aligns with California’s employee-friendly legal framework.
HRCI has been instrumental in my professional growth by elevating my credibility through certification, connecting me with a network of HR experts, and positioning me as an influencer and educator in my field. Since earning my HRCI certifications, I’ve experienced a shift in how I am perceived as an HR leader, both within my organization and the broader HR community. Maintaining these certifications has sharpened my strategic decision-making and reinforced my role as a trusted leader.

HR is more than policies and procedures, it’s about building relationships, understanding business strategy, being a problem-solver, and fostering a company culture of inclusivity and growth. Success in HR requires strong communication skills, adaptability, and the ability to navigate complex situations with empathy and professionalism. Above all, treating every employee with humanity and respect is essential, as HR plays a critical role in shaping the employee experience and driving organizational success.
But HRCI has given me more than just credentials; it has given me opportunities to give back and grow in ways I never expected. I have met some of my most trusted and valued professional connections through my volunteer work with HRCI. The relationships I’ve built within this community have become an invaluable brain trust—bringing together professionals who share similar values, education, and experiences.
Participating in HRCI’s standards-setting process and serving as a volunteer item writer and coach have kept me at the forefront of industry developments while allowing me to contribute to the profession I love. These experiences have strengthened my confidence as a subject matter expert, giving me the platform to share insights, mentor others, and help shape the future of HR.
As I celebrate 20 years with my organization, I’m taking a moment to reflect, not just on where I’ve been, but on where I’m headed next. HR is constantly evolving, and I plan to tap into HRCI’s network, continuing education, and thought leadership to stay ahead of the curve and shape the next chapter of my career.
With shifts in leadership at the national level and ongoing changes in employment law, pay equity, workforce diversity, and economic trends, it’s more important than ever to stay informed and adaptable. These factors directly impact how organizations attract, develop, and retain talent while fostering truly inclusive workplaces. By leveraging HRCI’s well of resources, I can ensure my approach remains strategic, innovative, and ready for whatever comes next.
There is always something new to learn in the world of HR! Companies are still navigating hybrid and remote work, AI is transforming how we operate, and the challenge of fostering a strong culture in a post-pandemic workplace continues to evolve. At the same time, we are entering a rapidly shifting and unpredictable political climate. As HR professionals, we must remain flexible, creative, and ready to adapt to new executive orders and workplace policies that may emerge. HRCI can help by providing the insights and tools we need to navigate these changes with confidence and continue driving positive impact in our organizations.
The area of HR I find most rewarding is fostering a company culture of inclusion and support. There’s nothing better than seeing a thriving, engaged team where people feel valued, motivated, and excited to be part of something special. Knowing that I’ve played a role in shaping an environment where employees feel supported, respected, and empowered makes all the challenges of HR worth it.
I believe great HR leadership is about creating an environment where people feel both challenged and supported. That’s why I’ve focused on building a culture of clear expectations, meaningful recognition, and positivity because when employees thrive, organizations do, too. Watching that impact unfold, seeing employees stay, succeed, and take pride in our mission is what makes this work so fulfilling.
