CEO Advisory Council

The CEO Advisory Council brings unique knowledge and skills to help further the HRCI mission of enabling people and organizations to discover, develop and demonstrate their fullest potential through innovative learning and certification in the ever-evolving world of HR. The Advisory Council is a resource to the CEO by offering advice, insight into industry trends and bringing a different perspective. 

John D. Varlaro, PhD, SPHR, GPHR

John Varlaro

Dr. Varlaro is a Professor of Management at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island. He has served as Chair of the Department of Management, and chair of University Faculty Council.

Dr. Varlaro wrote a Human Resource Management book, The Practice of Human Resource Management, which will enter its second edition in 2022. He publishes business cases and has contributed to several human resource management and strategic management textbooks.

Dr. Varlaro currently serves as President of the North American Case Research Association (NACRA), a nonprofit professional association that supports case research, writing and teaching in business and other academic disciplines. He is an editorial board member for the Philosophy of Management Journal and an Editorial Advisory Board Member for the South Asian Journal of Business and Management Cases.  

Dr. Varlaro has served HRCI in varying capacities. He was an inaugural member of the HRCI Certification Council, serving for five years on the council as well as its chair for two years. Prior to joining the Certification Council, he served as the Chair of the working group that developed HRCI’s Guide to the Human Resource Body of Knowledge (HRBoK), and for several years in certification exam development, including forms review and item writing.  

He earned his PhD in Business Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Dr. Varlaro also holds the SPHR and GPHR.
