Student Conversion

How to Convert Your Status

For students who passed the certification exam under former eligibility requirements (eligibility requirements updated in 2011-students no longer eligible to apply for exam).

Once you accumulate two years of professional level HR work experience, you can convert your status and start using the credentials after your name. To convert your student status to fully certified, send the HR Certification Institute the following:

  • Complete a Student Conversion Form

  • A letter from your employer or employers. Each letter must include your position title, dates of employment and professional HR work status. Each letter must also describe your job duties and include the signature and contact information of the person who is verifying your employment and be accompanied by a job description.
  •  Provide proof of graduation (an official transcript or a copy of the diploma).

  • Pay the balance of the exam fee ($130 for PHR; $255 for GPHR). The fee is nonrefundable. You may pay with Visa, MasterCard or American Express, or with a money order, certified/cashier’s or organizational/company check made payable to the HR Certification Institute.

  • Send information and payment to HR Certification Institute, PO Box 79905, Baltimore, MD 21279-0932. Allow 6 weeks for your information to be reviewed and processed.
