Our Certifications

California Designation (PHR-CA/SPHR-CA)

Our PHR-CA®/SPHR-CA® certification is designed for HR professionals who currently hold PHR® and SPHR® credentials and are experts in regulations and legal mandates specific to the state of California.

As an augment of the PHR and SPHR certification exams, the PHR-CA®/SPHR-CA® certification focuses on California HR-related laws and practices and does not test knowledge already covered on the PHR or SPHR exam. You need to hold a current PHR or SPHR certification to be eligible for the exam.

HR professionals who earn a PHR-CA or SPHR-CA have proven that they have mastered the unique skills necessary to practice in the state of California.

Eligibility Requirements:

You must hold a current PHR or SPHR designation to sit for the California exams.

Exam Format and Length

Computer-based Testing (CBT)
125 multiple-choice questions
2 hours and 15 minutes in length


Application Fee: $75 (application fee is non-refundable)

Exam Fee: $250  

Maintaining Your Certification 

Your CA certification will be valid for three years.  To remain certified, you must earn 60 recertification credit hours over the three-year time span.  There are many low- and no-cost ways to earn recertification credits. Learn More

  • Earn 60 hours of HR-related activities, of which 15 hours are California-specific OR retake exam.
