Need more information about applying for the HR certification exam(s) and/or the process of becoming certified. Would you like to take the PHR, SPHR or GPHR exam in the upcoming testing window and wish you could ask someone about it? The HR Certification Institute staff is here to help.

Moderator: Welcome to the Virtual Certification Counselor session. You may now submit your questions.

Rochester, NY: I graduated on December 2007 and participated in graduation ceremonies in May 2008. Am I eligible to sit for the test in May 2009 as a recent graduate?

Virtual Certification Counselor: If your graduation date on your diploma is December 2007 you do not fall within the guidelines to take the exam as a student.

Atlanta, GA: I currently attend Georgia State University and am graduating this summer 09. Are there certification prep courses at the college I can take to prepare me for the exam and are they covered by financial aid.

Virtual Certification Counselor: There are quite a few colleges and universities that offer prep courses for PHR and SPHR exams, however you will have to check with the specific college or university for their courses and whether or not financial aid covers it.

Detroit, MI: I am currently in school for my BBA - HR Management, but I have also worked in various positions within the HR field for over 15 year. Several of those years have been in an exempt capacity. I was wondering if I am still eligible to take the SPHR certification.

Virtual Certification Counselor: If you have two years of exempt level work experience in the HR field you will be able to apply for SPHR exam. Although the two years of exempt-level (professional) HR work experience need not be current or sequential, more recent experience is more likely to coincide with the exams content.

Montreal, Canada: Is it recommended to take the courses suggested by the SHRM before taking the exam?

Virtual Certification Counselor: We recommend that you read the HR Body of Knowledge in the 2009 Certification Handbook and determine from that what would be the best avenue for you to take in preparing for the exam.

Miami, FL: Hello, My name is Ayisha. My question is I would like to take the PHR exam in the spring testing window. I am a recent grad in July 2008 and wanted to clarify if I am eligible for student/recent graduate status for the PHR.

Virtual Certification Counselor: Hi Ayisha. As long as you have graduated between May 2008 to June 2009 you are eligible to sit for the exam as a recent graduate.

Washington, DC: How much preparation would it take to do this exam? Do I need to attend a class and work through sample tests? How do people approach the exam?

Virtual Certification Counselor: There is no specific time span that is needed to prepare for the exam. It is recommended that you read the HR Body of Knowledge in the 2009 Certification Handbook to determine the avenue of preparation that may best fit you.

Boston, MA: I took the exam in January 2008, in order to study for the exam I purchased the 2007 modules. I need to sit for the exam again and will be taking in May 2009. What I need to know is how can I go about studying for the exam with current materials and not have to pay for the new modules (approx $600). My 2007 books have all my notes as well. Has the information in the 2009 books changed drastically? Are there updates or other books that I could buy without purchasing the entire SHRM prep material again? If I absolutely have to I will I was trying to avoid a huge expense in these tough times. Please advise. Thank you!

Virtual Certification Counselor: The HR Certification Institute suggests you review the test specifications on our web site (/certification/2009hb/phr_sphr/) and compare to your 2007 modules.

Coeur d Alene, Idaho: Page 4 of the 2009 Handbook says 2-4 years of exempt level HR experience is "strongly recommended" to sit for the exam. I do not have that kind of experience. I did take the HR Assistant program offered at our local comm. college, made the Deans List and received all A's in the core subjects. I have worked in HR as a Generalist/Coordinator for the last 8 months until a reduction in hours made it impractical to stay on. In the past I have set up offices, recruited, selected and trained employees. I developed their training programs, monitored payroll and benefits. Doing this is what spurred my interest in HR as a career. I am confident in my abilities to sit and pass the exam. I am confused by the term "strongly recommended" and then later in the materials it is referred to as "required". Sorry long question.....

Virtual Certification Counselor: It is required to have at least 2 years of exempt-level experience in the HR field to sit for the exam.

Asbury Park, NJ: What is the best action to take to get certified? Would you recommend taking a 3 day seminar that is offered or the self study?

Virtual Certification Counselor: For information on study materials for the exam, please refer to the link listed below. /certification/2008hb/studyex/

Stockton, CA: I recently passed the SPHR exam for the second time on 01.24.2009. When will my profile be updated from expired to my present status? Thank you.

Virtual Certification Counselor: For those who took the exam and passed in the December 2008- January 2009 testing window, your profile will be updated by the end of March.

Silver Spring, MD: Have enrolled in the PHR classes which end in April. The information / body of knowledge presently are overwhelming as the courses are fast get-in and get-out mentality. So, is there a sample test one can take before the actual exam? Karen

Virtual Certification Counselor: The assessment exam is designed to help you: Assess your level of HR knowledge and experience, expose you to the types of questions you will see on the actual certification exam, and determine if you have the right experience and knowledge to attempt certification as either a PHR or an SPHR. Please refer to this link /assessmentexam/phrsphr/.

Rochester, NY: I have more than 2 years of HR professional level of experience but I am paid hourly, (non-exempt). Am I eligible to sit for the PHR exam?

Virtual Certification Counselor: You would presently be ineligible to sit for the exam. It is required to have 2 or more years of exempt level experience to sit for the exam.

Gambrills, MD: I'm currently enrolled in a prep course at a local university, how long will the HR Certification Institute online testing learnhr information be available?

Virtual Certification Counselor: The online test from learnHR is part of the Learning System that is developed and managed by SHRM. Please contact SHRM at 800-283-7476 and ask for the Education department and they will be glad to assist you.

Charlotte, NC: Do you recommend the SHRM Learning System as the best studying tool?

Virtual Certification Counselor: We recommend that you read the HR Body of Knowledge in the 2009 Certification Handbook to determine the avenue that best fits you in preparing for the exam.

Miami, Fl: How long after taking the PHR exam will the test result be available, in the spring window.

Virtual Certification Counselor: The results will be available 3 to 4 weeks after taking the exam.

Charlotte, NC: Hi, This is Meghana. I wish to go for the HR Certification Institute certification this May. I have about 7 years of HR work experience outside U.S. Which certification should I go for?

Virtual Certification Counselor: Please refer to the link below regarding choosing the appropriate exam. /certification/2009hb/intro/. You may also review our “Test Your Knowledge” quizzes (/certification/quiz/) to determine the certification that is best suited for where you currently are in your career.

Charlotte, NC: I also want to know the best option to prepare for this exam.

Virtual Certification Counselor: We recommend that you read the HR Body of Knowledge in the 2009 HR Certification Handbook and determine the avenue that best fits you to prepare for the exam.

Ogden, UT: If I have worked as an exempt employee about 13 years ago as a supervisor overseeing all aspects of personnel and I have two years experience beginning May 2007 in HR but in a non-exempt position, would I be eligible to take the PHR exam?

Virtual Certification Counselor: To be eligible to sit for the PHR, SPHR and GPHR exam, candidates must have at least two years of exempt-level (professional) HR work experience.

New York City: I would like to be PHR certified. How do I decide the best method to prepare for the test? I have been in the HR industry for 12 years.

Virtual Certification Counselor: We recommend that you read the HR Body of Knowledge in the 2009 HR Certification Handbook and determine the avenue that best fits you in preparing for the exam.

Sugar Land, TX: I did my MBA specialization in Human Resources and graduated in 2004. I have 1 yr and 3months of experience (exempt level) as an HR officer and 3 months as HR Trainee. Can I take the PHR exam?

Virtual Certification Counselor: To be eligible to sit for the PHR, SPHR and GPHR exam, candidates must have at least two years of exempt-level (professional) HR work experience.

Charlotte NC: How can I delete my application online as the option given doesn't work

Virtual Certification Counselor: Unfortunately, you are unable to delete the application. If you have not made a payment yet, the application will delete itself. If you have made a payment, please refer to the cancellation policy in the 2009 HR Certification Handbook.

New York, NY: If you do not pass the PHR exam, can you retake the exam? How many times?

Virtual Certification Counselor: If you do not pass the PHR exam you may apply to retake it in the next testing window. There is no limit to how many times you can take it.

Annapolis, MD: I have been in HR for the past 10 years, recently unemployed and now currently underemployed with a part-time position as an instructor. Will I still be able to take the exam?

Virtual Certification Counselor: Yes, as long as you have occurred 2 or more years (past or present) of exempt level experience in the HR field, you are eligible to sit for the exam.

Burlington, MA: In addition to the HR Certification Institute Body of Knowledge (6 modules) what other books/resources does SHRM or the HR Certification Institute recommend as a study tool?

Virtual Certification Counselor: We do not recommend any specific study methods. You can compare your experience to the HR Body of Knowledge to see what best fits you in preparing for the exam. There is also a section in the 2009 HR Certification Handbook that is titled "Study for the Exam", that may also lead you in the right direction regarding study methods.

Dayton, NJ: I am currently unemployed. Is financial aid available to take the SPHR exam in the spring session?

Virtual Certification Counselor: Financial aid is not available through the HR Certification Institute, however, if you are a member of SHRM, please contact the SHRM Foundation, they provide scholarships.

Los Angeles, CA: Is it possible to pass the PHR exam after only utilizing the SHRM learning system as a study tool?

Virtual Certification Counselor: It is possible to pass the exam by utilizing the SHRM learning system; however it depends on the experience that you have in the HR field.

Charlotte, NC: When do you receive your certificate after passing the PHR exam?

Virtual Certification Counselor: You should receive your certificate approx. two weeks after passing the exam.

Miami, Fl: If I am eligible for recent graduate status, does it matter if I am a SHRM member or not. Or would it be benefit me more to become a SHRM member before of after the exam.

Virtual Certification Counselor: No, it does not matter whether you are a SHRM member or not. However, once you have passed the exam and received you certification, it is a great tool for knowledge and for getting recertification credits in the future.

Dayton, NJ: Is financial aid available from the HR Certification Institute for taking the PHR/SPHR exam. I am unemployed now.

Virtual Certification Counselor: Financial aid is not available through the HR Certification Institute, however, if you are a SHRM member please contact the SHRM Foundation; they offer scholarships.

Long Beach, CA: I would like to take the PHR in the next texting window. My HR experience is all in healthcare. Are the exams specific to a particular industry?

Virtual Certification Counselor: No, the exam is not specific to any particular industry. We recommend reading the HR Body of Knowledge in the HR Certification Handbook to determine what would best help you prepare for the exam.

Los Angeles, CA: Is it possible to get the HR Body of Knowledge separate from the 2009 Learning System? I have the 2008 Learning System.

Virtual Certification Counselor: Yes, the 2009 Body of Knowledge is in the 2009 HR Certification Handbook.

Baltimore, MD: Would you consider college recruiting and student retention as HR experience.

Virtual Certification Counselor: Unfortunately, they would not fit the HR criteria.

Iowa City IA: I've been an exempt HR Generalist for 3 years. In 2007, I started taking evening classes at my local community college. I'm currently carrying 7 hours, and working FT. I will be getting my AA in May, then return to the University of Iowa to complete my degree (which I started in 1985). I'm hoping to be done with my BA in 2012. I paid full price for the testing fee, but then got to thinking... maybe I qualify for the student fee? Please clarify.

Virtual Certification Counselor: Student/recent graduates who meet the two-year exempt-level (professional) HR work experience requirement CANNOT take the PHR or GPHR exam as a student; they must apply as an HR professional.

Saginaw, MI: I have submitted an application for membership in SHRM, but have not rec'd a membership number. When I apply for the exam, how do I indicate this so I can receive the $50 discount?

Virtual Certification Counselor: It would be best to wait until you have obtained your SHRM ID# before submitting your exam application. You may want to contact SHRM to see if your membership has been added to their system. Their contact number is 1-800-283-7476

Miami, FL: I am preparing to take the PHR exam in the spring testing window. If I do not pass the exam, will I have to pay again for the exam the second time.

Virtual Certification Counselor: Yes, you will have to start the complete application process over.

Annapolis, MD: If asked, how do I prove that I have 2 years exempt experience if I'm no longer with that employer?

Virtual Certification Counselor: The best option would be to get in touch with your previous employer to get a job description.

Miami, FL: On the application for PHR exam question 46 (fees), Student* examination as a student/recent graduate (Partial fee- balance due ($130) upon meeting experience/graduation requirements. After paying the student fee of $120, is there an additional fee of $130 after passing the exam? Do not understand the question.

Virtual Certification Counselor: If you are applying for the exam as a student/recent graduate, you must pay $120 up front. Upon accumulating your 2 years of exempt level HR experience, the balance of $130 will be due at that time.

Los Angeles, CA: I just recently failed the PHR the last testing window. Are the prep courses more beneficial than the learning system?

Virtual Certification Counselor: It definitely depends on your learning style. The prep course is 3 days long and it simply a crash course but the learning system is done at your own leisure. However, the instructor led prep course utilizes the learning system, so you are getting the same information.

Moderator: Thank you very much for your questions. The next Virtual Counselor for application process questions will be October 1, 2009 at noon.

April 2009
Virtual Certification Counselor Session

Find out how HR certification can assist you in these tough economic times. Learn more about the benefits of certification and the value of having an HR credential behind your name. The HR Certification Institute's staff is here to answer your questions about earning your HR credentials.

Moderator:The Chat has begun. You may now submit your questions.

Baltimore, MD:I have been in HR for about 1 1/2 years, working in a specialist capacity. I would like to become certified and wondered if I needed to take the Essentials of HRM at my local college, or if I could take the 11 week Certification Prep course instead? Ideally, I suppose, I should take both but I am pretty familiar with all of the topics the Essentials would cover.

Virtual Certification Counselor:The HR Certification Institute does not specifically endorse any method of preparation for the exam, but we do recommend multiple resources. You would need to assess your own knowledge level, perhaps with our assessment exam and decide which course if either would be best for you.

Des Moines, IA:Do you recommend taking the PHR test prior to SPHR test, even if I meet the qualifications for the SPHR?

Virtual Certification Counselor: It depends on your day-to-day HR responsibilities. Because the PHR is more tactical in nature and the SPHR is more strategic in nature, you may want to review the Candidate Profiles in the Certification Handbook (http://hrci.org/certification/2009hb/intro/) to help you make this decision. We also offer an online assessment exam for the PHR and SPHR (http://hrci.org/assessmentexam/phrsphr/) that can also help you in making this decision.

Baltimore, MD:I would like to become a certified PHR. I am currently in HR and wondered if I need to take the Essentials of HRM at the local 4-yr college, or if doing the certification prep, and passing the exam, would allow me to become certified? Lauren

Virtual Certification Counselor:To be eligible to sit for the PHR, you must have two years of exempt-level HR experience. Once you meet these requirements, you may consider reviewing the Certification Handbook for studying tips.

Beaverton, OR:Many of my co-workers who have been in the field for years and have an HR degree have failed the test the first time. If one were to fail the first time can they re-take the test during the same testing period or do you need to wait until the next round of testing? Second time are all of the fees the same?

Virtual Certification Counselor:You can take the exam again; however, you would have to wait for the next testing window and all fees would have to be paid again.

Mount Hermon, CA:I didn't pass the exam the first time around, but I must admit I didn't study as well as I could have. I have the home/web based exam materials and intend to test again this year. How do I access the web-based portion of the materials? I don't see it in my paperwork.

Virtual Certification Counselor:You would need to contact the Holmes Corporation, the company which put together the Learning System. Their information should be in the package. If that fails, please contact SHRM Member Care.

Portland, OR:How do I obtain the Home/Web based material mentioned above?

Virtual Certification Counselor:You can visit www.shrm.org and order from that website.

Miami, FL:Having not been able to apply to take the exam until now, I am utilizing study material from the Learning System from a couple years ago. Anticipating there will be questions from the new laws (FMLA, GINA, etc.), how often is the test restructured? Also, is the test divided in segments (staffing, benefits, etc.)?

Virtual Certification Counselor:The HR Certification Institute creates new versions of the PHR and SPHR exams each testing window, so examinees should always be ready to answer according to the most recent laws and regulations. The test is not "divided" into sections; however the questions come from the 6 sections of the body of knowledge (strategic management, total rewards, employee and labor relations, human resource development, workforce planning and employment, and risk management). These questions are interspersed throughout the 225 exam items.

Des Moines, IA:I purchased the 2007 SHRM Learning/Exam Prep Kit and took the test in 2008. However I did not pass. Is it best to purchase the 2009 SHRM Learning Prep Kit to retake the test in late 2009 or early 2010 - or would the 2007 materials still be applicable?

Virtual Certification Counselor:The HR Certification Institute suggests you review the test specifications on our web site (www.hrci.org/certification/2009hb/phr_sphr/) and compare to your 2007 modules.

Moderator:Click the link or copy and paste url into your browser, http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/?p="WEB229L9T4MTQS" to enter survey.

Moderator:We are always looking for ways to improve our resources to ensure that we are meeting the needs of the audience we serve. Your feedback will be taken into great consideration and change will be made based on them. Thank you in advance for your contribution and time. The chat will now begin.

Boston, MA:I started the application about a year ago to take the exam, but did not go through with it. Is all of my information still in the system?

Virtual Certification Counselor:Your personal information is in the system; however, you will have to submit your work experience information.

Atlanta, GA:I am currently studying to take the PHR in December 2009. I am interested in training and development HR positions. Is there a website or special group that focuses on this area of HR?

Virtual Certification Counselor: You can go to shrm.org and they have several study options for the PHR/SPHR/GPHR exams.

Lakeland, Florida:Are you eligible to sign up for the SPHR exam & the PHR exam during the same testing window, if you schedule the SPHR exam a couple of weeks before the PHR exam? This way if you do not pass the SPHR exam you might still have a chance to take the PHR exam and obtain a PHR designation.

Virtual Certification Counselor:You are correct.

NY, NY:I am trying to find a pre-test. Is this the assessment test that must be purchased? I have materials from someone, but they circled all the answers. Can I buy practice tests alone?

Virtual Certification Counselor: The assessment exam is actually to assess your knowledge of the HR field. you may want to go to shrm.org for different types of study material.

Dallas TX:If I am recent grad as of 10/09 can I still sign up to sit for the exam although I graduated in October

Virtual Certification Counselor:Yes, you will still be eligible to sit for the exam as a student.

Tulsa, OK:So far I haven’t seen anything except the instructions on the survey and the first question

Virtual Certification Counselor: You may need to refresh your browser

Raleigh, NC:When is the last day to register for the exam?

Virtual Certification Counselor: The deadline is Oct. 9 and the late registration deadline is Nov. 13 with a $50 late fee.

Anaheim, CA:I am currently employed in an exempt level position with more than two years of experience; however, a layoff likely looms in my future. Do I need to be employed at the time I take the exam? Is it ok if I am employed in a non-exempt position at the time I take the exam? (I may have to take whatever job I can, as jobs are scarce out here.)

Virtual Certification Counselor:You do not have to be employed at the time you take the PHR/SPHR/GPHR exam. Yes you may be employed in a non-exempt at the time you take the exam.

Virtual Certification Counselor:Yes, you can sit for both exams in the same testing window.

Menlo Park, CA:How long does the process take to become certified?

Virtual Certification Counselor:After you have passes the exam you will receive your score results within two to three weeks.

Lakeland, Florida:Will you have to submit a separate application and application fee? Or can you just pay the two different testing fees with the one application?

Virtual Certification Counselor: You will have to submit 2 applications and 2 separate application fees

Boston, MA:I am still trying to decide between the SPHR and the PHR. I am eligible for both, but I am a recruiter, and the PHR is more focused on staffing. Are there any thoughts on that?

Virtual Certification Counselor:Regardless of which one you take, please remember that both are truly generalist exams. Even though the PHR may focus more on recruiting, it is not recruiting specific. The PHR candidate focuses more on implementation and has more of a tactical, day-to-day orientation in his/her duties. This person has 2-4 years of exempt level generalist HR experience. The SPHR candidate, on the other hand, designs rather than implements and focuses on the big picture. This person has 6-8 years of progressive HR experience.

Tulsa OK:I bought the SHRM books for the 6 modules last year. Is this information still relevant if I take this fall's SPHR exam?

Virtual Certification Counselor: Yes, you can still use the same materials. it is usually updated every 3 to 4 years

Atlanta, GA:Let me clarify. I am currently enrolled in a class that trains to take the PHR exam, I am concerned AFTER I obtain my PHR license if there is some sort of avenue that I can publicize by degree and or search for jobs particularly in training and development

Virtual Certification Counselor:You can publicize your certification by a sample press release that can be found on our website. At your request, we can also send a letter to your manager/company which details your accomplishment. Research has shown us that 1 out of 2 employers look for an HR professional who is certified, so using a search engine in the appropriate website (Monster, CareerBuilder, etc.) may yield the results for which you are looking.

Virtual Certification Counselor:The HR Certification Institute does not endorse any specific study preparation method or course nor does it maintain information about them. In fact, we strongly recommend that candidates use multiple reference materials when studying for the exams. The focus of any study program should be on the functional areas and the HR content that falls under those functional areas. Some recommendations for preparing for the exam are listed below: The HR Certification Institute’s PHR and SPHR Certification Guide. This is an excellent resource on how to approach the certification review process. The HR Certification Institute offers online assessment exams for both the PHR and SPHR exams. For more detailed information regarding studying for the exam please refer to /certification/2009hb/study/.

Chicago, IL:I have been an exempt employee for more than 4 years in managerial positions and in Feb 2008 I became a HR Manager. Would I have to wait until after Feb 2010 to register to take the PHR exam?

Virtual Certification Counselor:As long as you have two years of exempt-level (professional) HR work experience you will be able to apply for the exam.

Menlo Park, CA:I am currently an HR Manager, however am currently at a non-exempt status? How will this affect my application?

Virtual Certification Counselor :You must list your job title as Other-Non Exempt Level (000) on your application; submit a completed Supporting Documentation form (found in Appendix D) and attach an official job description to show that the position was at an exempt level (professional) and that at least 51 percent of the daily activities were HR focused. Candidates who do not provide this information will be ineligible to take the exam. For more information regarding the eligibility requirements, please refer to the link below to download the 2009 PHR/SPHR/GPHR Certification Handbook. /hrci_files/_items/hrci-mr-tab2-1442/docs/2009%20certification%20handbook.pdf.

Ocala, FL:If I did not pass the SPHR in the Spring, what will I need to do to take the test this upcoming time?

Virtual Certification Counselor:You will have to reapply (complete another exam application and repay all fees).

Tulsa OK:I have several years of broad generalist experience and am now currently in an ER position. I am concerned that if I obtain my SPHR that I will not have as much opportunity as I had in the past to do the type of strategic work to maintain my SPHR. Should I focus instead on PHR?

Virtual Certification Counselor: It is definitely up to you which exam you would like to take. however, if it may seem harder to get the strategic credit in your current position, you can always take classes through SHRM to obtain those strategic credits. check out the e-learning courses at shrm.org

Clearwater, Florida:Can study material for the PHR exam be obtained at a local library or book store?

Virtual Certification Counselor:You may be able to obtain information from the local library or book store. The HR Certification Institute does not endorse any specific study preparation method or course nor does it maintain information about them. In fact, we strongly recommend that candidates use multiple reference materials when studying for the exams. The focus of any study program should be on the functional areas and the HR content that falls under those functional areas. Some recommendations for preparing for the exam are listed below: The HR Certification Institute€™s PHR and SPHR Certification Guide. This is an excellent resource on how to approach the certification review process. The HR Certification Institute offers online assessment exams for both the PHR and SPHR exams. The online assessment exam for the GPHR exam will be available September 30, 2009. For more detailed information regarding studying for the exam please refer to /certification/2009hb/study/.

:What are some of the benefits of certification and the value of having an HR credential behind your name since the economy and business practices are in some cases completely phasing out the HR departments?

Virtual Certification Counselor:One of the biggest nuggets from our research from earlier this year has shown that 1 out of 2 hiring managers prefer an HR professional that is certified in HR. This moves the resume/application to the top of the stack. Even as some companies are phasing out HR departments, even more are outsourcing them! These outsourcing companies are looking for the same credentialed HR professionals.

Raleigh, NC:I am currently an exempt H-R Manager in a civilian company. However, I have been an H-R Manager for 12 years in the military. How do I account for my experience level?

Virtual Certification Counselor: Your military as well as your civilian experience will count as long as it is exempt-level

Jacksonville, FL:Is it appropriate to add the certification letters behind your name along with your degree letters

Virtual Certification Counselor:Yes, we have seen both the degree (MS, MA, JD, and MBA) listed along with the credential (PHR, SPHR, etc.).

Alexandria, VA:Are you finding that more employers are requiring or preferring HR professionals with the certification or that organizations prefer consultants with the credentials?

Virtual Certification Counselor:If I understand the question correctly, our research has found that 1 out of 2 hiring managers prefer an HR professional with an HR designation. Although some companies have outsourced HR and use consultants, they also want them to be HR certified as well.

Virtual Certification Counselor

Are you taking the PHR, SPHR or GPHR exam in the upcoming testing window and wishing you could ask someone about it? The HR Certification Institute Virtual Certification Counselor (VCC) session starts at 12 noon ET on November 5.

Moderator: Welcome to the Virtual Certification Counselor session. You may now submit your questions.

Lebanon, NH: I have books from 2007 for the PHR. How much of a difference is there, other than the laws, for the 2008 PHR exam.

Virtual Certification Counselor: The Body of Knowledge (topics that are covered on the exam) remains the same. As you mentioned, any laws or regulations or NLRB decisions that have undergone change since 2007 may be changed.

Redmond, WA: Can you change the date of your exam and if so, how do you do it?

Virtual Certification Counselor: Exam appointments can be rescheduled within the testing window. Candidates cannot reschedule to another testing window. Raleigh, NC: When will the new schedule for 2009 be out and able to register for a test?

Virtual Certification Counselor: Registration for the Spring testing window will open on January 12, 2009.

New York, NY: I am debating how to go about preparing for the certification exam. Are there specific answers which method works better, studying on your own or in a group/class?

Virtual Certification Counselor: There is no single best method that works for everyone. A lot depends on how disciplined an individual is to study independently as opposed to working with a group. Also, in a group, multiple viewpoints can be shared. Some people find that independent self-study meets their needs and schedule, while others find study group participation more desirable. Evaluate your own learning style and decide which study approach will help you the most. Our Certification Handbook (/certification/2008hb/?2008-PHR/SPHR/GPHR-Handbook) has a section that discusses the various options for exam preparation.

Moderator: Thank you for your participation! The transcript will be posted to the website in the next week.

Virtual Certification Counselor

Are you taking the PHR, SPHR or GPHR exam in the upcoming testing window and wishing you could ask someone about it? The HR Certification Institute Virtual Certification Counselor (VCC) session starts at 12 noon ET on October 1.

Moderator: Good Afternoon, Welcome to HR Certification Institute’s Virtual Counselor session. We will be answering questions pertaining to the application process only. You may now start submitting your questions. HR Certification Institute

Minneapolis, MN: when will the 2009 handbook and test dates be available?

HR Certification Institute: The new 2009 handbook will be available in mid to late November; however, the testing windows do not change. They will still be May 1 to June 30 for the spring window and December 1 to January 31 for the winter window.

North Andover, MA: Will there be a calculator available?

HR Certification Institute: Your computer assigned at the testing center will have a calculator available for your convenience.

Minneapolis, MN: I’m debating between taking courses at the university and getting a certificate in hr or the phr. what are the advantages of one or the other? I am not technically exempt. I worked as a SR recruitment coordinator (associate recruiter) and am now in orientation and integration. How hard is it to get approved?

HR Certification Institute: The PHR certification demonstrates your entire understanding of the HR body of knowledge, which is why you are allowed to use PHR after your name. A certificate teaches you about a specific or general area of HR but you can not use it after your name. You can only list it in your resume versus the PHR can be list on your resume and the letters after your name.

Villanova, PA: What is the general type of question on the SPHR? Do you find they expect you to know about specific laws? Dates? names? etc.

HR Certification Institute: The 225 questions on the exam are multiple choice. Please refer to the link below regarding the test specifications for the SPHR exam. /certification/2008hb/apx-a/

Mobile, AL: I've read about how the test is scored and what is considered a passing score, but I have not seen the # of questions that must be answered correctly in order to pass. What is that number?

HR Certification Institute: Thank you, that is a frequently asked question. The 225 questions on the exam are based on a scale score and not the number of questions that must be answer correctly in order to pass the exam. All questions have a level of difficulty which constitutes the scoring system used by our organization. Please refer to the scoring system link here /certification/examdev/scoring/ or visit our website www.hrci.org and read about how the exams are developed and the scoring system.

Peachtree city, GA: We have several employees that perform 100 percent HR functions daily in a generalist role for 2 or more years but are non-exempt. Would they qualify to submit an application for the exam?

HR Certification Institute: Unfortunately, non-exempt employees do not meet the requirement to sit for the exam.

Los Angeles CA: Is there any increase in the application fees for 2009?

HR Certification Institute: The fees for 2009 will remain the same as in 2008.

Seattle, WA: Good morning from Seattle. I've just submitted my application for the SPHR exam and want to make sure I've provided everything necessary for your consideration. I completed by PHR certification in 1998.

HR Certification Institute: If you were able to find an exact match for your job title on the position code list there is nothing else you need to submit. However if you were unable to find an exact match for a job title on the position code list (found in Appendix C) you must list that job title as other or 999 on their applications; submit a completed supporting documentation form (found in Appendix D) and attach a job description or similar document to show that the position was at an exempt level (professional) and that at least 51 percent of the daily activities were HR focused.

Chicago, Illinois: Do you recommend taking a preparation class before taking the exam?

HR Certification Institute: We actually suggest using various methods when preparing for the exam. In the handbook, we have a section called "Studying for the Exam" with suggested methods for your convenience. Please accept the handbook online at your convenience.

Bridgewater, NJ: My last name is very long, and my NJ driver's license drops the last letter. Do I register with my correct last name, or the name on my driver's license?

HR Certification Institute: Register for the exam the way your name appears on your driver’s license. Once you have passed the exam we will correct your name on your certificate.

Peachtree city, GA: If I apply online do I have to submit payment on line or can the payment be mailed via check?

HR Certification Institute: If you are applying online a credit card payment is required in order for your application to go through. If you are paying with a check, please mail a paper application.

Peachtree city, GA: I may have overlooked it, but I couldn't find the HRCI preparation course study on the SHRM bookstore site. What is the cost?

HR Certification Institute: Please contact SHRM at 800-283-7476, opt 3 for member care. They administer preparation courses for our certification exams.

Dayton, Ohio: What is the best way to prepare oneself to take the PHR exam?

HR Certification Institute: The HR Certification Institute does not endorse any preparation materials because this is a work experience exam. Please refer to the link listed below regarding studying for the exam. /Certification/2007HB/STUDYEX/

Orlando, FL: I recently was laid off, however, did maintain a non-exempt management position for 5 years. Would I be eligible to obtain the PHR credentials, although I have not worked directly in an HR role?

HR Certification Institute: Unfortunately, non-exempt positions do not qualify for the exam. The position must be exempt in order to sit for the exam.

North Andover, MA: Are you required to have a college degree in order to take the PHR exam?

HR Certification Institute: No the PHR, SPHR and GPHR certification is intended for professionals who have at least two years of exempt-level (professional) HR work experience. For more information on eligibility requirements, please refer to the link below. /certification/2008hb/apply/#BM_HRCI-MR-TAB2-1293

Minneapolis, MN: in regards to your answer for the Peachtree question-couldn't they complete the supporting documentation form to show that the work was over 51percent professional hr related? some people are paid salary, but qualify for overtime after a certain point. could you clarify please?

HR Certification Institute: Qualifying for overtime is not the issue as long as the position is exempt level and the person is doing at least 51 percent HR of their daily activity. If the position is classified "salary/exempt" but the job title is not listed on the list of approved position codes in the handbook, the candidate must document 51 percent by using the supporting documentation form from the handbook.

Minneapolis, MN: If an applicant fails to pass the SPHR exam, the requirement is you cannot take the exam in the same testing window, is this being recon sided as it would be beneficial to be able to retake the exam in the same testing window if possible with the assumption seats would be available. Thank you!

HR Certification Institute: An applicant can secure two seats in the same testing window as long as he/she submits 2 applications by the deadline. We do not accept applications after the late application deadline.

Bridgewater, NJ: My current position is non-exempt, but my two previous positions total 9 years of exempt level experience. Am I still eligible to sit for the exam?

HR Certification Institute: If you have at least two years of exempt-level (professional) HR work experience you may apply for the exam. Your two years of exempt-level (professional) HR work experience need not be current or sequential.

Orlando, FL: I apologize, I meant exempt position...

HR Certification Institute: If the position was "exempt" then it is ok. If you are currently laid-off it does not mean you can not sit for the exam.

North Andover, MA: I just realized from reading the question from Georgia about spelling of your name, that my last name has an apostrophe in it and that is how I registered, however when I checked the way my name is on my driver's license, the driver's license does not have the apostrophe. Will this be a problem? If so, how do I correct it? Thank you

HR Certification Institute: Please fax us copy of your driver license with the spelling of your name so we can correct it on your application. Our fax number is 703-535-6474, Attn: Oscar

Villanova, PA: How long is the test window - what if you need to get up during test?

HR Certification Institute: The testing window is December 1, 2008 through January 31, 200; Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. You are allowed four hours to take the exam and you may get up during the exam if you needed.

Glendale CA: Is taking the PHR- CA better than the PHR? what's the difference?

HR Certification Institute: The PHR test the entire HR body of knowledge and CA is based on California HR practice. However, to take the CA certification you must be PHR or SPHR certified first in order to add the CA designation to your current certification.

North Andover, MA: With regards to the question from Minneapolis regarding taking the exam a second time in the same testing window - you would be required to pay for two exams, is this correct?

HR Certification Institute: That is correct. Two applications mean 2 fees which equal to 2 exam records.

Burlington, Ontario: A GPHR Exam preparation course is being offered in Toronto in November. Do I need to have studied the modules before attending this course or can I attend without any preparation?

HR Certification Institute: You may want to refer to the GPHR test specifications before taking the course using the link below but you can attend the course without any preparation. /certification/2008hb/apx-b/

Mobile, AL: How much notice do I need to give to the testing center once I have decided when I want to take the test?

HR Certification Institute: Once you receive your "Authorization to Test Letter/ATT Letter" we suggest securing your prefer testing date and center location. Please review the scheduling policy in the handbook for your convenience, /certification/2008hb/afterex/#BM_HRCI-MR-TAB2-1282.

Villanova, PA: So as long as we pay for each test, we can sign up to take the test as many times as we want in a test window - just in case we fail one?

HR Certification Institute: No you can only take an exam once in the testing window and then you may reapply of the next testing window.

Dayton, OH: If taking the PHR from the student/recent graduate perspective, what happens next after taking the exam in order to be officially certified with the PHR credentials?

HR Certification Institute: Students/recent graduates have five years from passing the exam to obtain two years of exempt-level (professional) HR work experience. The PHR and GPHR certification is awarded after students/recent graduate candidates: Obtain and document two years of exempt-level (professional) HR work experience on company letterhead; provide proof of graduation (an official transcript or a copy of the diploma); and Pay the balance of the exam fee $130.

St. Louis, MO: I'm working as a HR Generalist (exempt level) since Nov. 2008 before I was working as HR Assistant (1 year) I had been working in HR since 1998 back in my home country before moving here to get my MS in HRM. When should I take the test? I'm considering next year, but I'm not sure which month (May or November) Any advise/feedback.

HR Certification Institute: To sit for the exam you must have 2 years of HR exempt level work experience. If your HR work experience back in your country was exempt and your HR duties are equivalent as the responsibilities described in the HR body of knowledge, you may document it on the application and the supporting documentation form. The candidates decide when they wish to sit for the exam; that is a personal choice based on when you meet the requirements and when you believe you are ready to sit for the exam.

Moderator: HR Certification Institute would like to thank you all for joining us in our Virtual Counselor session. All answers will be posted to the website for your review in a few days.

HRCI Virtual Counselor

HRCI's Virtual Certification Counselor (VCC) session will take place April 10 from 12 noon - 1 p.m. ET. The VCC is a Q&A forum to assist certification candidates with learning more about the process of getting certified. You can submit your questions at any time during the chat.

Moderator: Welcome to the Virtual Certification Counselor session. You may now submit your questions.

New Mexico: How can I let my bosses know this is a good thing to have?

HRCI: It might be a good idea to have your manager visit this link: www.hrci.org. It explains the purpose as well as the process of achieving the certification. Having the designation suggests that you as a professional possess an overall knowledge of the field. To maintain the designation, one has to stay current in the field, almost ensuring your value to the company.

McDonough, GA: This is my first virtual counselor session. Do we not see each others' questions and your answers?

HRCI: Yes, you should be able to see the questions from other participants.

BristowVA: I attempted to register for the exam window of December - January but could not. The registration seemed to only allow for the exam in May. When may I actually complete my registration for the later exam? Thank you.

HRCI: You will not be able to register for the December/January exam window until shortly after the May/June administration.

HRCI: If you are having issues seeing any questions, please refresh your page by pressing F5.

Chicago, IL: I have been responsible for payroll since 1996 and due to a change in management I have been "baptized by fire" in various areas of HR since 2004. I have been told I could be classified as a HR generalist. What steps should I follow in pursuing a PHR certification?

HRCI: From what you are saying, as long as 51% or more of your time has been spent doing exempt-level HR duties for at least 2 years, you would qualify to take the exam. More is listed under the eligibility section of www.hrci.org.

Chicago, IL: I am looking at the website and I do not see an eligibility section. Can you be more specific to where that is located?

HRCI: Please use this link to read more about eligibility: /certification/2008hb/apply/#BM_HRCI-MR-TAB2-1293

Phila., PA: My SPHR will expire in 2009; how many 'strategic' credits do I need

HRCI: Please e-mail me at gscott@hrci.org with more specific information (name, etc); the answer will depend upon when you achieved this certification.

Moderator: Thank you for your participation! The transcript will be posted to the website next week.

March 4, 2008
Virtual Certification Counselor

HRCI's Virtual Certification Counselor (VCC) session will take place Tuesday, March 4, from 12:00 noon - 1 p.m. ET. The VCC is a Q&A forum to assist certification candidates with learning more about the process of getting certified. You can submit your questions at any time during the chat.

Moderator: Welcome to the Virtual Certification Counselor session. You may now submit your questions.

San Francisco, CA: Does my employer need to be involved in the application process?

HRCI: They do not. Unless your application is audited and you need to demonstrate the 2 years of HR exempt level work experience then they will need to provide you with a letter that describe your duties and responsibilities. Other than that the entire process is detailed in the HRCI handbook.

Durham, NC: I have been doing human resources for over 10 years and in the last five years have concentrated on training-what is going to be the better exam for me the PHR or SPHR?

HRCI: The PHR exam focuses on day to day and technical aspects of the field. The SPHR focuses on strategic management and the policies issues of the field. For more information, please refer to this link /Certification/2008HB/APPLY/

Henderson, CO: If I initially register for the PHR Certification but decide at a later point prior to the testing window that I wish to test for my SPHR, can I change it or am I stuck with testing for the PHR until the next window?

HRCI: You can change your exam level up to 10 business days from your scheduled exam. However, there are policies and procedures in the section "After Applying for the Exam" that details what is needed in order to change your exam level.

Las Vegas, NV: I purchased the 2007 SHRM Learning System, is this material still applicable for the exam in 2008? If not, how do I go about getting updates?

HRCI: HRCI does not endorse any particular preparation materials. The test specifications that you will be tested on will not change. Review the test specifications; this will help you to determine if you need to purchase the 2008 SHRM Learning System.

Santa Clara, CA: I had originally stated that I would take the PHR in the NCHRA class that I'm currently attending; however my experience level falls in the SPHR arena. And I see there is a fee to switch. At what point will this fee be assessed? I'm I already committed to taking the PHR since that is what I chose in class? I have not applied for the exam yet.

HRCI: If you have not applied for the exam yet, and you feel your exempt work experience is more senior level, you may submit your application by March 14. The fee only applies once you have applied for the exam. The HRCI handbook section "After Applying for the Exam" details the policy about exam level and testing center location changes.

Edmond, Oklahoma: My current position description is "Non-Exempt", but my job duties are not in line with what the FSLA labels as non-exempt work. I develop and deliver training, coordinate new employee orientation, participate in hiring decisions, etc. My immediate supervisor has been trying for two years to get me changed to exempt. Will this be a problem for me to be able to take the PHR certification test?

HRCI: Candidates must demonstrate exempt-level (professional) HR work experience. In the United States, exempt is defined by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and its amendments. If your job title is classified as non-exempt but you are doing exempt level work according to the Fair Labor Standards guidelines you must list that job title as other or 999 on their applications; submit a completed supporting documentation form (found in Appendix D) and attach a job description or similar document to show that the position was at an exempt level (professional) and that at least 51 percent of the daily activities were HR focused. Candidates who do not provide this information will be ineligible to take the exam. To learn more about exempt versus nonexempt work experience, visit the U.S. Department of Labor Web site at www.dol.gov/elaws/flsa.htm.

Lake Buena Vista, FL: Is it a good idea to prepare for the assessment exam? Or just take it to see where your knowledge level is?

HRCI: The assessment exam is a practice exam to help you identify your weaknesses and strengths before preparing for the exam.

Kansas City, Mo: Do you know of any certification study groups in my area?

HRCI: Unfortunately, we do not. However, you may contact SHRM at 800-283-7476, opt 3 customer service and they will be happy to assist you with your question. HRCI only do the administration of the exam.

Edmond, Oklahoma: Do I need to take the assessment exams? What value is there in it? They seem expensive!

HRCI: The assessment exam is designed to help you: Assess your level of HR knowledge and experience. Expose you to the types of questions you will see on the actual certification exam. Determine if you have the right experience and knowledge to attempt certification as either a PHR or an SPHR. Assess the results of your exam preparation strategies (if you purchase the two-exam pre- and post-test package.)

Marietta, GA: Are the scores of the PHR testing made public?

HRCI: The scores are confidential. Only the candidate receives their official score.

Houston, TX: I graduated on May 15, 2007. Am I eligible to sit for the test between May1 - May 14, 2008?

HRCI: You will be able to test between May 1 - June 30, 2008.

Washington, DC: I have submitted an on-line application to take the PHR exam. Once the application is reviewed and approved, what can I expect next?

HRCI: The application is reviewed within 2 weeks. You will receive a letter from our testing office with instructions to schedule the exam with our vendor Prometric testing centers.

Kansas City, MO: Do you have to be an exempt level employee now to take the exam in May? My previous position was exempt, but this one is not.

HRCI: No, your two years of exempt-level (professional) HR work experience need not be current or sequential; however, more recent experience is more likely to coincide with the exam's content.

Birmingham, AL: I am torn between joining a SHRM study group or just purchasing the SHRM Learning System to study on my own. The commitment to the group is overwhelming since they cram 8 study sessions into the month of March and I can't do that right now. I must decide if I should study for it now on my own to take in May/June or wait and take the study course in the fall. Any advice?

HRCI: Our advice is to study from various sources and to be realistic as the time devoted you may need when studying for the exam.

Santa Clara, CA: If I get the PHR first then later the SPHR, how do I go about keeping both at their current certification levels? Do I have to take double the amount of CE units? Or do some CE classes count towards both?

HRCI: If you get the PHR first and then the SPHR, the SPHR supersede the PHR, therefore, you only need 60 hours to keep your SPHR at the end of your 3 years cycle.

Homewood, Alabama: Where can I see all the information that will be on the exam without purchasing the $595 SHRM Learning System? I am trying to decide if I should take it or not since my focus is recruiting, but I'd like to be knowledgeable in all HR areas.

HRCI: The areas that you will be tested on are listed on Appendix A "Test Specifications" in the HRCI handbook. Here is the link for your convenience, /Certification/2008HB/APX-A/

Winchester, VA: What can I do if the employer I last worked for (6 1/2 years ago) which is where I began my duties in the HR generalist arena, is unable to provide me with any documentation? It is a large company (100,000+ employees) and due to layoffs at the time I also was laid off, all of the people I worked directly with are also no longer there?

HRCI: You are responsible for submitting any documentation as needed. If you are referring to an audit, the company's HR department would be able to verify employment.

Austell, GA: I graduated in June with a Masters in Human Resource Management. I don't have any direct HR experience and was told that if I took the PHR certification exam, it would show that I'm serious about getting into HR, any thoughts?

HRCI: If you graduated in June 2007, you can apply for the PHR as recent graduate during the May-June testing window only. After passing the exam, you can not use the designation, but you can list it on your resume as a demonstration of your HR knowledge and interest in the field. Please review the HRCI handbook online and refer to the student or recent graduate eligibility requirement for the entire policy.

Tallahassee, FL: I submitted a completed application on 02/29 and the confirmation page stated that "candidates with successfully transmitted applications will receive an email within 24 hours". I have not received an email, should I contact PES to ensure my application has been received?

HRCI: I would highly suggest contacting PES for confirmation. Their phone number is 866-744-4724.

San Francisco, CA: Is worth while to take both the PHR and SPHR exams during the same timeframe?

HRCI: That is a personal decision. However, candidates can apply for both exams during the same time frame by the application deadlines.

Houston/Texas: I have been a Generalist for the past 7 years in the same company (Hospitality Industry). While studying for the exam, I have realized that some of the SPHR questions are right down my alley. Without having experience in a different industry, do you suggest I take the PHR or the SPHR? Thank you.

HRCI: We are unable to advise you on which exam to choose. The PHR exam deals with day to day and technical aspects of the field and the SPHR exam is more focused on strategic management and the policies issues of the field.

Monterey, CA: For the upcoming application deadline on March 14, do you just need to have submitted your online application by the 14th?

HRCI: Correct. Your application can be submitted electronically no later than 11:59 pm ET or the paper application can be postmarked March 14.

Gambrills, MD: I am currently working part-time as an instructor teaching behavior modification. I have never worked in an HR department, but have 2 years HR experience as a Staffing Coordinator for a temp agency from 1995-1997. I have an MBA 02 and an Executive Graduate Certificate in Human Resources Management 06. Can I sit for the PHR exam?

HRCI: If you have at least two years of exempt-level (professional) HR work experience you may apply for the exam. Your two years of exempt-level (professional) HR work experience need not be current or sequential, more recent experience is more likely to coincide with the exam's content.

San Francisco, CA: I am in the process of moving to another state. Is possible to have the letter with the instructions regarding the test sent via email rather than to a home address?

HRCI: The letters are sent via mail. However, your authorization to test letter can be also retrieved from your online record once you are approved to sit for the exam.

Boston, MA: What is the benefit of having a dual PHR/SPHR certification?

HRCI: Because of the nature of the exams and their common body of knowledge, the PHR and SPHR designations cannot be held concurrently. The SPHR supersedes the PHR.

Lake Buena Vista, FL: Just to confirm my understanding: If I submit my application by the deadline, I will be able to take the exam anytime during the testing window, right up to the June 30, closing date?

HRCI: That is correct. Once you are authorized to take the exam you will select your exam date and testing center location of your preference upon your availability. All instructions to complete the scheduling process are listed in your letter and also the HRCI handbook.

Half Moon Bay, CA: I have not yet completed the application to take the test. About how much time should I plan to set aside to complete it?

HRCI: You should probably set aside approximately 30 minutes.

Austin, TX: What if I don't pass the PHR exam on the first try? Can I try again?

HRCI: Yes, if you take the exam and do not pass you will be able to reapply and repay all fees in the next testing window.

AtlantaGeorgia: I am exempt level but only have been working in the HR field for 2 months, Do you think I should wait to take the exam or if I study the material I will be fine.

HRCI: You must have 2 years of HR exempt level to sit for the exam. The exam is based on HR exempt level work experience. You may want to study your materials closer to your exam time.

Little Rock, AR: Do we receive a pass/fail result right after we complete the PHR exam?

HRCI: Yes you do. However, your official scores are mailed to you within 3 weeks from your exam date.

Little Rock, AR: I know the testing centers allow for 4 1/2 hours to complete the PHR exam. But, what is the average time that it takes to complete the PHR exam?

HRCI: We do not have statistics on the average time. We suggest using the given time to answer all the questions.

Lake Buena Vista, FL: Are the tests administered in groups according to a fixed schedule or to individuals based on appointments?

HRCI: The tests are administered individually at Prometric testing centers.

Altoona, PA: Since the test is now electronic, if you need to skip a question, are you able to go back and review the exam to relook at skipped questions?

HRCI: Yes, you can mark questions to come back to later.

Half Moon Bay, CA: Do you suggest taking the self assessment tests prior to attending a prep course or between the course and the time of the actual test?

HRCI: You will probably want to take the assessment exam before your preparation course begins. That way you will know which are will need more concentration when you are studying for the exam.

AtlantaGeorgia: I am sorry I submitted a question earlier. I have been in the HR field for 2years at exempt level 1 year and 10 months as benefits person and the last 2 months on the operation side. Do you I still should take the test now or later.

HRCI: You can apply for the exam now. Remember, all you need is 2 years of HR exempt level.

Moderator: Thank you for your participation! The transcript will be posted to the website in the next week.
