Do you know how to document your continuing education activities for recertification? Are you wondering how your on-the-job experience or leadership activities will convert to recertification credits? Ask your questions now and get answers from HRCI's staff. Moderator: Welcome to the Virtual Recertification Counselor session. You may now submit your questions. Medina, MN: If I created a Diversity Committee to create awareness about Diversity issues at our hotel and then held meetings and various events, would that count towards the strategic portion of my SPHR recert and how would I count it? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: Because diversity is tied the HR Body of Knowledge via Core Knowledge Required by HR Professionals, it would not be awarded strategic credit unless you could show how doing this elevated your organization's value proposition. Las Vegas, NV: If all my credits are not approved, can I resubmit with additional credits? If so, how long do I have to resubmit? My PHR re-cert is in May. Thanks! Sue HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: If your credits are not approved. We will contact you and allow ample time for your submit additional activities or information. Remember, all activities will still have to have taken place within your cycle dates. Columbus, OH: My certification expires in the middle of June - when do I have to have my recertification application turned in? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: All of your activities must have taken place by your due date. The recertification application is due on the last day of your cycle. We do allow you a 30 day grace period to turn in the application. After that, the $25 late fee goes into effect. Houston, TX: How do I know if a training class or e-learning is counted as "strategic"? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: The Strategic Management domain of the PHR/SPHR Body of Knowledge encompasses those HR responsibilities that fall OUTSIDE of the traditional human resources function. Generally, if the subject matter is contained in one of the five other domains of the Body of Knowledge (Workforce Planning & Employment, Human Resource Development, Total Rewards, Employee and Labor Relations, and Risk Management), it belongs there and NOT in the Strategic Management Domain. For additional information, please visit the HRCI website: /Recertification/STMGT/SMCREDIT/ Madison, WI: My PHR is due to expire at the end of May. I will sit for the SPHR exam in early May and am taking a 12-week course (3 hours per week) through the University to prepare for the SPHR exam. In the event fail the SPHR test, does the time I spent in the class (36 hours) and the time spent taking the SPHR exam count "hour for hour" towards my PHR recertification requirements. HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: You can use the time spent in class for the Learning System toward your PHR recert. HRCI would not award recertification credit for the time spent taking the SPHR exam. Bala Cynwyd, PA: Can credits for the PHR been earned by attending the SHRM Annual Conference this June, by attending the workshops or in any other manner. HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: Yes. HRCI awards credit for the almost all of the concurrent sessions at the SHRM Annual Conference. http://www.shrm.org/conferences/annual/ Columbus, OH: I have recently become responsible for Health & Safety in my corporation - how would I document this new experience for credit and how many hours can I receive? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: Under the On the Job category, provide the dates and a brief description of what new duties you took on as a result of your new position. Estimate the amount of time you invested in learning these new responsibilities. Note that the maximum amount of time that you may be awarded under On the Job is 20 hours. Philadelphia, PA: My coworker and I have a few credits to finish up for our recertification in May. We are planning on downloading the 1 hr sessions listed on SHRM's website to get these final credits. Is there any limit to the number of these that you can submit for credit (as long as it doesn't exceed the number of credits for the category you are submitting under)? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: HRCI awards a maximum of 20 hours for audiotapes, videotapes, webcasts, CDs and DVDs. There is no maximum on the amount of e-learning you can do and count toward recertification credit. New Jersey: How do I submit my documents for recertification? Also I am in the process of obtaining my Bachelors Degree will I be able to use any of these courses for recertification credits? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: Please visit our website at www.hrci.org; click on My Recert File to log on. Then click Report or Add New Recertification Activities to access the online recertification application. HRCI awards recertification credit for HR-related college and university coursework. For detailed information regarding the recertification guidelines, please visit our website at www.hrci.org/Recertification/RECERTCE/ or you may download the Recertification Handbook at www.hrci.org/Recertification/BOOK/. Bala Cynwyd, PA: I recently attended a 3-day training session to learn our new human capital management and payroll system. How can I apply that to my HRCI credits? I also will be training our employees and managers on this new system. The training will be approx 1 hour long and I will hold several meetings for different classifications of employees. How can I apply that? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: The 3-day training would be submitted under Continuing Education. Please provide the specific dates for all 3 days. HRCI awards 6 hours per day. If you have documentation indicating that you invested more time, then ask for the additional time and be prepared to fax it to us. Wichita, Kansas: Title: H.R. Generalist- I've in the process of completing my BS in HR Management. Since obtaining my PHR certification last 6/05, I have taken a lot of HR classes, Staffing, Compensation, Labor Relations, etc. Do these count? And it so, do I have to write a description of the classes, projects, etc. in order to receive credit for them? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: We award credit for HR-related courses. The courses listed qualify for recertification credit. If you submit a course that is not HR-specific, it will be necessary to include the course description. Philadelphia, PA: Can a Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Certification course count towards recertification? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: Yes. Chicago, IL: If I already have enough recertification hours for my 6/05 - 6/08 certification period, can I use the recertification hours I earn in June at the SHRM Conference in Chicago for my next cycle? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: Yes. Madison, WI: My on-line Recert file indicates that I have submitted 69 eligible credits to date. None have been reviewed and none have been awarded. How will I know if those activities already completed will be deemed acceptable for recertification? It would be nice to "know as you go" in terms of what will count so that I can complete other activities in the event some are not counted. How do I know if what I've already done will be counted? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: Recertification applications are not reviewed until they are submitted with the recertification payment. If you have a question about a specific activity because you are unsure how to calculate hours or whether it would be appropriate for credit, we suggest you first reference the Recertification Handbook at: /Recertification/BOOK/. We have answered many questions about recertification credit there. If you still have concerns then contact us via email or phone with info about the activity and we will review it. However, we cannot "in effect" review recertification applications where payment has not been submitted. The high volume of paid recertification applications must be given priority. Mineola, NY: Can you provide any general guidance on utilizing our day-to-day experience towards recertification. HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: HRCI awards credit under the On the Job category for first time work experiences because they can be considered "learning experiences". The maximum amount awarded under On the Job is 20 hours. More info about how credit is awarded is found in the Recertification Handbook: /Recertification/BOOK/ Phoenix, AZ: I currently have over 60 credits and will be adding a few more prior to submitting my application. If there is anything that does not get approved, for whatever reason, will I be notified why and will I have the opportunity to explain? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: Yes. We will notify you and allow ample time to provide additional information or submit additional activities for review. Remember, all activates still had to have taken place by your cycle end date. Jupiter, FL: I give a presentation to an HRIS program senior class each year at a University - does this count towards recertification? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: Yes. Recertification credit is awarded only for the first time the presentation is made. Preparation time is taken into consideration by awarding 1.5 credit hours for every hour of the first presentation. We do not award credit for multiple presentations on the same topic. Houston, TX: How many credit hours are awarded for annual membership in SHRM or IHRIM? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: We award three recertification credit hours per year (maximum 9 credits) within your recertification cycle for a national SHRM membership; two credit hours per year within your recertification cycle for a national or international HR-related association membership. There category maximum is 10 credit hours. Charleston, WV: SHRM host several webcast and the webcast are archived. What date would I use when registering the webcast on my recert application if I listen to the archive after the original webcast? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: The date you viewed the webcast. Adrian Michigan: I have recently provided four sessions of training to supervisors about legal issues in supervision. The four topics were hiring, firing, workers compensation, and discipline/counseling. I see this training as strategic learning since I was able to present best practices for the topics and engage supervisors in conversation to help them and help each other develop supervisory skills which help the organization improve and manage resources more effectively. Would you agree that this would be considered strategic? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: The sessions qualify for general credit, not strategic. For detailed information regarding the strategic management requirement, please visit our website at www.hrci.org/Recertification/STMGT/. Baton Rouge, LA: I am over our insurance department including both property/casualty and health benefits. When attending educational seminars approved for P&C insurance industry can these seminars be applied for recertification for PHR? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: Good question! They must be tied to the HR Body of Knowledge, Total Rewards. These would most like need to be reviewed on a case by case basis. Please contact HRCI with information on any of the courses that you are not sure of for guidance. Uniontown, PA: How many credit hours would you receive for teaching a HRCI test prep class? Is there a set amount, based on hours and are any of them in strategic HR? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: The guidelines for how credit is awarded under Instruction are found in the HRCI Recertification Handbook: /Recertification/BOOK/ Credit is awarded only for the first time the presentation is made, so the same presentation made to several different audiences is awarded recertification credit hours only for the first presentation. Preparation time is taken into consideration under this category by awarding 1.5 credit hours for every hour of the presentation. For example, a one-hour presentation would be awarded 1.5 recertification credit hours. Twenty credit hours are awarded for teaching a semester-long, HR-related college-level course. Camden, New Jersey: I have been attending a University based leadership program which are full day educational experiences once per month. I believe that most of these courses will satisfy my strategic credits but I am unclear about how much detail about each course I need to include so that HRCI can determine credit worthiness. My organization also holds two hour follow up sessions on each topic conducted by our top leadership. This helps us integrate the learning into operations and I am unclear of how to describe these sessions. If examples of this exist, it would make it clearer as to the level of detail I need to include in my re-certification submission. Thanks! HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: In order to qualify for Strategic Management credit, the activity must link directly to the responsibility areas listed under "Strategic Management" in the HR Body of Knowledge. For detailed information regarding the strategic management requirement, please refer to the following resources: Strategic Management Pointers:www.hrci.org/Recertification/STMGT/. Recertification Handbook: www.hrci.org/Recertification/BOOK/. Virtual Strategic Management Counselor Sessions: www.hrci.org/Recertification/VSM/ Shawano WI: Hi there - Thanks for offering this today... I have a couple questions for you. 1 - I've met my requirements for the current recert period; at what point can I start putting my events into the next recert cycle? 2 - I'm developing our company's wellness program, what types of documentation do I need to maintain for credits? Thanks, Jane HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: 1. You must wait until your current cycle has ended. After the last day of this cycle, then you can begin accumulating hours for the next one. 2. Emails and meeting notes that refer to your contribution or role are helpful. Company-wide memos that refer to you as being involved in the project are also good. Charleston, WV: I attended an Oracle HRIS conference this past year. Oracle didn't request certification for the conference from HRCI. Can I still use this conference in the Continuing Education field? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: yes Sacramento, CA: I'm trying to submit hours that will apply to California credit since I'm now SPHR-CA. My profile indicates I need 15 hours, but have been told it's really only 5, so want to confirm that. Also, there's nothing in the "Add New Activity" task that allows you to specify California - only Strategic. I've asked info@hrci.org this question 3 times and each time they say "it's there." Last time they suggested I "refresh" and I'll be able to see it. I've refreshed, tried a different browser, and tried a different computer, and it's still not there. Any suggestions? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: Please contact a Recertification Specialist at (866) 898-4724 to discuss your concerns. Birmingham, AL: I have spent the last 6 weeks in Nashville on acquiring a new business unit. I have covered several HR area I was unfamiliar with (Benefits, Outplacement, HRIS Integration, and general business practices with Controllers, Operations Directors, etc... I have spent no less than forty hours on strictly HR initiatives. In looking at a bare minimum of 120 hours onsite, I was thinking about submitting just 10 percent (12 hours) for recert credit. Seem fair? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: I am not totally sure whether you are talking about taking a course or training on HR responsibilities when acquiring a new business unit or whether this is something going on in your organization. If it is a structured training/course, then you may submit it under Continuing Education. If this is a first-time work experience, then you would submit it under On the Job. Do not "parcel out" the hours you are requesting. If you believe you invested 120 hours in this learning experience, then you need to submit 120 hours. HOWEVER, the most that HRCI will award under On the Job is 20 hours. Don't knock it down to 12. Uniontown, PA: How many credits do we get for Board Membership/holding office, attending board meetings and independent local board work? Are any of those credits in strategic HR? How do we submit them if we don't get pre-approval? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: This information is covered in the HRCI Recertification Handbook under the Leadership section./Recertification/BOOK/ Moderator: Please submit your final questions as the session will be ending at 1:00. Baton Rouge, LA: Under continuing education category what type of activity do I place audio seminars under? Choices provided by HRCI are: college or university; conference/seminars; workshop; e-learning; webinar/webcast; videoconferencing, pre-approved event; or other? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: Go ahead and put them under Webcast/Videoconference, Podcast, Tape, or DVD. Audio seminars are subject to the 20 hour maximum. Phoenix, AZ: Can activities surrounding a RIF be counted as on the job experience? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: Yes, if the activity it is a first-time work experience that adds to your HR body of knowledge.
Panama City, FL: How many webinar archives can I use for recert?
HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: HRCI awards a maximum of 20 hours for audiotapes, videotapes, webcasts, CDs and DVDs. Manassas, VA: I work for a Biotechnology company. Our company convened a task force to develop a company-wide policy on Environmental Control and Monitoring. We have been meeting once a month for 1-2 hours developing policies and reviewing environmental testing results; then making program change recommendations to our Senior Executive Team. I am the only non-scientific person on the team. My role is to provide the "average person" sanity check to all the suggestions on gowning procedures, cleaning procedures, changing room set up, product testing, such as booties, lab coats, etc. Over the last several years, I have spent over 50 hours on this project. Would any of this time be considered eligible for the Strategic Management requirement for my SPHR? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: No. It is conventional HR responsibility to monitor Risk Management and to be contributing HR expertise to anything that would legally affect your employees. Huntersville, NC: During the past year, our headquarters office relocated from OH to NC. I was responsible for all employee activity, such as separation packets, offers to relocate to NC, recruiting for 65 positions to be filled at new office and relocation efforts (including movement of equipment from OH and relocation packages for 55 associates). Would this type of circumstance qualify for recertification? I was responsible to develop a plan for staffing and movement of our office. It was all new to me. HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: Because this was a first-time work experience, you could submit it under On the Job. San Diego, CA: I conduct Company wide Open Enrollments every year for several offices throughout the US. Does this count as credits and if so, does it count as one process? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: No. Only first-time work experiences may be counted for recertification credit. /Recertification/BOOK/ Olympia, WA: If I joined SHRM mid year (not a renewal) how do I calculate my recert credit? I do not get the full credit points correct? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: For a national SHRM membership, we can award 1.5 recertification credit hours for six months within your recertification cycle. Lee's Summit, MO: I passed my SPHR on 1/28/08. Will I be receiving any information in the mail about how to recert through continuing education? Don't want to get too far behind as I'd like to ensure I average 20 credit hours per year. Perhaps I'm overly anxious? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: You will receive a recertification packet that will include the HRCI Recertification Handbook and info about how to apply online. If you like you can go online and see the Recertification Handbook now at: /Recertification/BOOK/ Orlando, FL: Great Plains was added to our office and we had on-site training. Does this count and where can we put this? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: We can award recertification credit for formal HR-related on-site training under the Continuing Education category. Cedar Rapids, IA: If I worked with another HR Mgr at my company (we are in different divisions) on company wide training for a brand new ethics policy (we had nothing formal in place before) that was created by our HR Director and then we each did the training at our own divisions, can I count the first hour of that training towards on-the-job credit? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: No. For On the Job, you would have had to participate in the initiative and/or the creation. However, you can count the presentation hours (x1.5) of the first training session for strategic credit under Instruction. Charleston, WV: I have provided training to our HR Preventatives for COBRA, HIPAA, Benefits Plans, Workers Comp, and Disability Plans during the past 2 years. Can I use this training as credit under Instruction? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: This is covered in the HRCI Recertification Handbook, found at: /Recertification/BOOK/ HRCI awards recertification credit for a one-time presentation of material. Lexington, KY: Does a CPC designation warrant recertification credit? I attained this certification a year after my SPHR. Also, if my SPHR recert was taken on 6/5/05, and I attend the professional development courses at the Annual Conference, can I still use these credits for this recert period? Thanks! HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: We award credit for HR-related courses that fall within your recertification cycle. It will be necessary to list each course/session attended for evaluation. : I have begun a role as HR Manager and I am now meeting with Benefit Brokers, handling Benefits Roll outs from beginning to end, doing 40 percent recruiting (which before I only did entry level), am responsible for managing the 401k process and reports and STD, leaves, etc. Are any of these tasks items I can gain re-cert credits? Also, I would like a few of my recert credits to include a training session to other HR Professionals....if selected for an HR/NY meeting as a presenter...what topics are eligible? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: First-time work experiences may be awarded recertification credit under On the Job. Please refer to the HRCI Recertification Handbook at: /Recertification/BOOK/ Training that you conduct on HR-specific topics may be awarded credit for first-time presentation hours (x1.5)under Instruction. More information can be found in the Recertification Handbook at the link provided above. Madison, WI: I'm PHR certified and am sitting for the SPHR. If I pass the SPHR, I do not need to recertify as a PHR, correct...? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: Correct, the SPHR certification replaces the PHR certification. Fairfax, VA: I attended a half day conference last week on Workforce Issues - Recruiting and Retaining Across Generations. Can I count it towards recert credit? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: Yes, these topics qualify for recertification credit. Thanks! HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: When you submit it for credit, include in the description part the fact that it takes place at a university once per month. Provide a BRIEF course description. If we need additional information to determine whether it is related to HR or the workplace, then we will request it and allow ample time for you to provide more info. Blue Bell, PA: My company has developed its own, internal HR certification program focused on 3 areas it feels our organization could benefit from further development. We are interested in having our internal program considered for Re-Cert hours as an additional way to incent our employees to participate in the program. How can we secure certification by HRCI for our internal program? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: Please visit our website at www.hrci.org/CEPreApprovals/OV/ regarding HRCI Pre-approval Programs. Hunt, TX: Is there any problem with submitting all of my re-certification credits a year and a half before my re-certification date? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: No. You just need to understand that you will not begin to accumulate hours toward your next cycle for another year and a half until that cycle begins. Edgewood, MD: I have submitted some credits already and have not heard if they were accepted. Also, I attended/completed a 12 week PHR and SPHR Mgmt course. It did not tell us the value of the CEU's. How do I find that out? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: Activities are not reviewed for credit until you have logged 60 hours and paid the recertification fee online. I suggest you contact the course facilitator and ask for documentation for contact hours. HRCI awards hour per hour credit for activates that add to your understanding of the HR Body of Knowledge. Phoenix, AZ: My certification date is May 2005 and I am up for recertification May 2008. If my professional membership dates to SHRM were 11/1/05 - 10/31/06, 4/12/2007 - 4/30/08 and finally 5/1/08 - 4/30/09, can the last membership be counted as 3 hr credit for this recertification period or do I have to use it next time? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: Recertification credit will reflect your national SHRM membership during your recertification cycle. In your case, we would award 6 recertification credit hours for your current cycle. The last membership will count for the next three-year period. Huntersville, NC: I recently spent time in the Paris, France office for one of our sister divisions to help them create a succession plan and aid in the performance review process. Does this international experience count? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: It can count for credit if is: 1. A first-time work experience (creating a succession plan and coaching performance review). 2. If you have a GPHR and you can articulate how the experience working in the Paris office added to your understanding of the GPHR Body of Knowledge, then you can count it as International experience. Las Vegas, NV: I had a visit from OSHA - we developed a program and addressed all issues raised. It was an extensive process - would those hours count? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: The activities submitted under On the Job should be activities that you have never before engaged in, so that they can be defined as a learning experience and be used toward recertification credit. It is not clear from your description that you had never engaged in these activities before. If you submit it for credit, make sure to indicate how this added to your understanding of the HR Body of Knowledge. Cedar Rapids, IA: During my 3 year re-certification, I began managing safety and at a later date training. These are not areas that I dealt with previously. These were areas that were managed by another person who left the company and/or took on new responsibility. Can I count this towards on-the-job credit hours? How do I know how many hours to count? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: The activities submitted under On the Job should be activities that you have never before engaged in, so that they can be defined as a learning experience and be used toward recertification credit. You need to estimate the amount of time that you spent learning these new responsibilities. Submit the full amount that you believe you invested. However, HRCI awards a total maximum of 20 hours under the On the Job category. Camden, New Jersey: I'm not sure if I submitted this correctly so if it's a duplicate, please disregard. I have been attending a University based leadership program which are full day educational experiences once per month. Thanks! HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: Please see previous answer. Bellingham WA: Are we required to submit electronically now or can we still submit via hard copy our recertification? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: At this time there is a hard-copy application available for download. However, we encourage you to submit electronically if possible. /Recertification/BOOK/ Philadelphia, PA: I teach a class for MBA students in Finance entitled "Business Law, Compliance, Benefits & Social Responsibility." A large part of this course involves human resources' role in management. How can I get SPHR credit for this? What do you need to see from me? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: You can contact us and submit a course description for review. Philadelphia, PA: Your answer to another Phila, PA question confused me. You said: "HRCI awards a maximum of 20 hours for audiotapes, videotapes, webcasts, CDs and DVDs. There is no maximum on the amount of e-learning you can do and count toward recertification credit." What kind of e-learning are you talking about that isn't subject to the 20-hr limit? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: There is a 20-hour maximum for videoconferences, audio and video tapes, cds, podcasts & webcasts (accumulatively). These educational formats are considered passive learning. Online learning such as eLearning typically require participation and the learning outcome is assessed via quiz or test. Therefore, there is not limit for eLearning training. Norfolk, VA: My intention is to submit all the hours I have completed (even though they are greater than the category limits) to ensure that if an activity is not approved (for the right category or same number of credits), then I will still have enough for recertification. Is that allowable or will they automatically not look at more than the maximum for that type of activity? (for example submitting 30 strategic hour credits and 45 general all in the continuing education section). HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: It is OK to submit more than the max awarded. That is helpful because if we cannot approve one activity for the credit requested (as you described) then we have more choices and opportunities to award credit. However, once we have determined that your requirements have been met, we will not review additional activities. Orlando, Florida: How many CEU's can you get for renewing your SHRM membership, and can membership with local SHRM chapter count as well (if so, how much)? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: We award three recertification credit hours per year (maximum 9 credits) within your recertification cycle for a national SHRM membership. We do not award recertification credit for local memberships. Lexington, KY: I received the CPC (Cert. Personnel Consultant) Certification a year after my SPHR, does the prep work and/or this certification count towards recert? Thanks! HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: Time that you invested in a training, prep course, or other structured coursework for the certification may be submitted for recertification credit. Phoenix, AZ: One of the areas for earning credit is "On The Job Experience". Can all time spent in researching, designing and implementation of a new training program for newly hired and promoted supervisors, managers and regional directors be counted hour for hour - in tracking the time spent it came to 16 hrs HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: If it is a first-time experience for you and you can articulate how it added to your understanding of the HR Body of Knowledge, then it would be appropriate for On the Job credit. You need to provide the start and end dates for your involvement and a brief description of the activity. Sanford, Florida: A local university offers 3 hour seminars on HR issues like conflict resolution, leadership skills training, etc. They did not apply for HRCI credit; it is something they offer all employees. How can I get HRCI credit for attending these workshops? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: Activates do not have to be pre-approved for recertification credit by HRCI in order for you to receive recertification credit for attending. You can submit them under Continuing Education. Alexandria, LA: When reporting recertification hours from SHRM State Conferences is each session listed separately with the hours or do you only list total hours earned for the portion of the conference attended? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: If you attended the entire 2-day plus, conference you can submit it as one event for a max of 12 hours. If you want to get strategic management credit, or if you want more than 12 hours of credit, then you must submit each session individually. Orlando, FL: I want to submit info for an on-the-job experience that deals with my work on the creation of a training resource sharing website and the development of guidelines for submitting documents for the site. I will be serving as a member of the committee that reviews/approves submissions for upload to the site. Is this a viable project for recertification credits? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: If this is a first time work experience, you will have to describe your contribution to this project and how this added to your HR body of knowledge. Columbus, OH: I attended the SHRM Conference in 2004 and was given a recertification worksheet to complete on the sessions I attended. I still have that sheet, but have misplaced the detailed notes. How descriptive do I have to be when submitting these sessions for credit? Do I have to be able to provide details on what I learned in these sessions? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: No. If you attended the entire 2-day plus, conference you can submit it as one event for a max of 12 hours. If you want to get strategic management credit, or if you want more than 12 hours of credit, then you must submit each session individually. Orlando, FL: My recertification period does not end for a couple of years, should I go ahead and enter the credits that I've already taken - also, what happens when I submit the max required for the period. Does that change my renewal date? Thanks. HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: You may enter your activities as you go along. You can submit your recertification for review as soon as you have acquired sufficient credits. This will not change your renewal dates. Upon successful recertification, your new cycle will reflect three years out from your current recertification end date. Detroit, MI: My company is part of a division that our parent company recently sold. I have been participating on Task Forces to determine how my company should establish or modify our strategies, policies and processes to now function as a stand-alone organization. How would I calculated recertification credit and would that work qualify for strategic SPHR credit? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: The activities submitted under On the Job should be activities that you have never before engaged in, so that they can be defined as a learning experience and be used toward recertification credit. You need to estimate the amount of time invested in the project and request credit. Note that the maximum amount that HRCI will award under On the Job is 20 hours. If you want strategic credit, you must explain how this went outside of conventional HR responsibility and impacted the business bottom line. Orlando, FL: We develop and distribute HR related newsletters to our supervisors on topics such as employee retention, performance appraisals, discipline, etc., as our supervisors are on the road a lot. Does this count as teaching training seminars like the Michigan question? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: No. Only structured courses with defined learning outcomes that you personally teach may be awarded credit under Instruction. Sanford, Florida: That P&C question turned a light bulb on for me as well... How about worker's compensation training to staff and safety training? HRCI Virtual Recertification Counselor: Recertification credit may be awarded under Instruction for teaching a course on Worker's Comp. The safety training would have to be OSHA required training rather than a session that goes over safety policies for your organization. Remember that credit is awarded only for a first-time presentation of material. Multiply the presentation time by 1.5 to determine credit.

When can I begin tracking my participation in courses and webcasts? Where can I access the tracking vehicle? HRCI: The database transfer for individuals who tested during this exam testing window will be uploaded to HRCI database in mid August. Thereafter, you will be able to begin recording activities to your online recertification application, as this option will be available. To access the online recertification application once you have logged on to your "Recert File", please click on "Report/Add New Recertification Activities" under Action Items. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact HRCI Customer Relations at (866) 898-4724. DallasTexas: After you have completed and submitted 60+ hours for SPHR recertification, can you immediately start accruing hours for the next recertification cycle. My certification runs out in June. Do I have to wait until July to start accruing hours for the next cycle? HRCI: You can begin accruing hours for your next cycle once you have entered into your new cycle. For example, if your cycle ends June 2008, you can begin to accruing hours in July of 2008 for your next cycle. Pittsburgh, PA: I recently completed, submitted and paid for my recertification application on-line, but I would like to add additional information. How would I do that? HRCI: Once you have submitted your application for review, you will not be able to add additional activities until your application has been reviewed. You will be contacted on the status of your application. Should you need additional hours to complete your recertification you will be able to do so at that time. Boise, Id: I understand there to be a $100 application fee for recertification. Is this correct? HRCI: The application fee for recertification is $100. EverettWA: How much detail do we need to specify for each hour of training we receive if a course was not approved for HRCI credit? HRCI: If the title of the program is not HR-specific, please provide the course description in order for us to evaluate recertification credit. Moderator: Good afternoon all. Thank you for participating in our Virtual Recertification Counselor session today. This session is designed to answer general recertification questions. Apex, NC: I was laid off from my job a little over a year ago. I have since relocated, but not gone back to work full time yet. Can I request an extension on submitting my recertification hours and how would I go about that? HRCI: Individuals who have been out of work for at least one year within their recertification cycle due to a layoff are eligible for an extension. Please refer to page 28 of the Recertification Handbook (/recertification/book/) regarding the recertification extension policy. Boise, ID: How much detail is required when submitting project work? HRCI: Under the on-the-job experience category, recertification credit can be earned for a first-time work experience that adds to the understanding of the HR body of knowledge. Please provide a brief description of your new experience, the duration dates and hours spent on the project. If the calculated hours spent on the project(s) exceeds the 20-hour maximum, please request 20 hours on the application. St. Louis, MO: I would like to affirm my understanding of providing leadership as a volunteer for recertification credit. For two years, I have served as the People Team Leader for the Governing Body at United Church of Christ. I serve on the Governing Body, which is the leadership team providing HR guidance, and I chair the People Team. The People Team handles hiring, employee relations, support, and training for volunteers and church employees. I believe this is worth 10 recertification hours under leadership. Correct? HRCI: We award credit under the Leadership category for contributing your HR expertise to the community and to further a volunteer organization's mission. Recertification credits for leadership activities are based on the leadership role (Committee Member, Committee Chair, Board, etc) and length of service per year. The category maximum is 10 hours. Atlanta, GA: This will be my second time to recertify as PHR. On the two previous occasions, I recertified with the 'old' rules. What are the changes with the new rules? HRCI: No changes for PHR certified professionals. Raleigh, NC: Hello. My name is Marilyn Bethea. I have been saving my recertification credits in a folder. However, I would like to start entering those credits into my account. How do I begin this process? My recertification is not due until next May I believe. HRCI: Please view our Virtual Recertification Tour online. Here you will find a detailed explanation on how to enter your recertification hours in your online recert file. View this link /recertification/vrt/. New Orleans: I attended the Staffing Management Conference in 2007 and cannot locate my documents. Will I get credit if I listed the information on my file? Thanks, Emily HRCI: We award a maximum of 12 recertification credit hours for attendance at a conference, unless additional information is provided (i.e. certificate stating contact hours or an agenda) indicating a greater time commitment. Please note that HRCI does random audits. Should you be audited documentation will be required. Charlotte, NC: All divisional HR Mgrs attend an annual HR conference held at the corporate headquarters. It runs for 2 days and we cover many topics. Three of this year's topics were performance management, employee relations and workplace investigations (conducted by one of our corporate attorneys). How do I request credit for PHR recertification for these hours? HRCI: All you need to do is to add the information to your Recert File. When you submit your recert file for review, this information will be reviewed for credit. Danielsville, GA: I am building my recertification file. It is not complete yet, but I would like to have some confirmation about whether the training, seminars, activities, etc. that I have entered so far are going to be accepted. Because if some of them are not, then I need to make plans to work on other things. Is it possible to submit what I have now, even though I know it's not complete, just to see where I stand? HRCI: Rcert files are only reviewed once they have been submitted and the application fee has been received. There are a greater number of files coming than there are reviewers. I have two suggestions to assist you with ensuring that your credit hours are accepted. One suggestion is to apply your activities to the "Body of Knowledge". When documenting your activities, also add the section in the "Body of Knowledge" in which the activity applies. Credit hour accepted based on the "Body of Knowledge". Also, submitting more than 60 credit hours help. This will help just in case some activities are not accepted. Fullerton, CA: I'm not sure how to document some of my work experiences. My facility was without a VP-HR for half of last year and I "kept the ship afloat" during that time frame. How do I document the additional duties & experiences that I took on while working at that higher level? HRCI: You should describe a first-time work experience that added to your HR body of knowledge during that time frame. Please provide a description of your learning experience and the duration dates and time committed. Boise, Id: To recertify for my SPHR, I need 60 recert credits. Are the 15 strategic credits in addition to the 60 general credits or a part of the 60? HRCI: The 15 strategic credit hours are a part of the 60 you need to recertify. Ewing, NJ: Under the on-the-job category, would I be able to include my assistance to my company in our work to outsource pieces of the HR function that we used to handle? I have provided expertise and knowledge to the project team of which I am a member, and ongoing supervision of the functions. This is my first time being involved in outsourcing HR functions. Thank you. HRCI: This activity may be submitted in this category if it is a first-time work experience. You would provide details of the activity and request the maximum number of hours if the project took more than 20 hours. Central NJ: I researched, developed, and formalized a Diversity Program for our Company. Where, on the certification form should the information be identified, and how much certification credit is granted? HRCI: If this was a first-time work experience, it may be submitted under the On-The-Job category. You would request the maximum number of hours which is 20 assuming that the activity took at least that amount of time or more. Omaha, NE: What criteria do we use to determine if on-the-job experience counts towards CEUs? HRCI: The body of knowledge is used to determine if on-the-job experience can be used as credit hours towards your recertification. If your work experience applies to the body of knowledge, than it will count towards your recertification hours. DanielsvilleGA: When I took my certification test, I took the SPHR test. After I passed that test, I had a change in my career and since then I have not had the opportunity to engage in strategic management activities, so I doubt that I will be able to recertify for the SPHR. However, I am still immersed in daily HR activities and know I'd have no trouble with a PHR certification. Can an SPHR recertify for a PHR certification? HRCI: One can not "downgrade" from an SPHR to a PHR designation. You must recertify at the SPHR level to maintain your SPHR certification. You may obtain strategic hours under the continuing education, instruction, on-the-job, and research and publishing categories. For detailed information regarding the strategic management requirement, please refer to the following resources: Strategic Management Pointers:www.hrci.org/Recertification/STMGT/. Should you need assistance, please contact us at (866) 898-4724. Portland, OR: I recently volunteered as a mentor for my company's structured mentoring program. They provide binders on how to mentor and three books we're required to read. We are then matched up with our mentee by their interest. The program lasts for six months. What documentation would be needed to qualify this mentoring opportunity on my recertification application? HRCI: HRCI only award credit for mentoring if it was for an activity done outside of your organization. Vicksburg, MS: I attended a workshop on 5/30/08 and received a certificate with a HRCI code, but when I try to enter the information online I am told the workshop has not been approved for that time frame. Is this just a timing issue? HRCI: You would need to contact HRCI's Customer Relations Department at 866-898-4724 to have someone look up the program ID that you were given. Hermitage, PA: I recently retired but would like to keep my PHR certification active in case I decide to return to the workforce. I am due for recertification in December 2008 and need about 15 more credits. Since I don't have the extra funds to attend courses, can I use the webcasts to get all of these credits? Thanks. HRCI: There is a maximum of 20 hours for webcasts so your 15 should be fine. Milwaukee, WI: I was a member in a work group looking at a new learning management system for our organization. I participated in several meetings (totaling approx. 30 hours of direct work time) to discuss the design of the new system. Would I be able to use that experience as part of my on-the-job experience requirement? HRCI: if your on-the-job experience can be applied to the current body of knowledge than you can use it towards for recertification credit. Bellevue, WA: If I take a SHRM e-Learning program online, and it is approved (has the seal of HRCI approval) and it does NOT have a pre-approval code, is that entered as e-Learning or as Pre-approved? I have entered these as Pre-approved. If they should be entered as e-Learning, do I need to delete and re-enter them? Thanks. HRCI: Please enter as "e-Learning". Since you have already entered the programs as pre-approved, it is not necessary to reenter. The reviewer will apply the credit appropriately. Dallas, TX: I didn't see a way to print a receipt for the $100 recertification fee. Am I missing something or does the receipt come after the recertification review is complete? HRCI: You should have gotten a receipt automatically. If you did not get one, please call HRCI's Customer Relations Department at 866-898-4724 and someone will be | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
