Having worked for 34 years in the HR profession at various levels, including at divisional and corporate headquarters for both public and private companies, it seems silly for people like me to have to recertify every three years. I think HRCI should consider a life time certification for us war horses.

Hi Donald,

First, let me thank you for being the VERY FIRST response to our blog! We really appreciate the feedback and the fact that you took the opportunity to post a comment.

I am glad you asked this question because it provides an opportunity to clarify the mission of the HR Certification Institute. As you may already know, we did have a Life certification status that was discontinued in the ‘90’s. This occurred because it did not align with the mission of the organization.

The president at the time, Catherine Fyock explained, “The PHR and SPHR certifications signify that we recognize the professional’s level of knowledge in the field. To ensure the continuing legitimacy of the certifications, we must ensure professionals’ ongoing currency.”

By continuing to recertify your HR certification, you are demonstrating that you are keeping up-to-date in a quickly changing work and legislative environment. Recertification is the proof that your 34 years of experience is current.

is there a support group to share and help each other prepare for the PHR-GPHR exams? I did not pass the first time and plan to retake the exam in the next testing window. I'm curious if there are others out there who did not pass who would like to share the experiences and study strategies to assist them to pass on the second round or even third?

Hi Pamela,

We are not aware that there are any official support groups to assist with preparing for our certification exam(s) but we do know of a few individuals who may be able to lead you in the right direction. Social networking and web 2.0 are great forums for connecting you with other HR professionals who are preparing for the PHR or GPHR exam as well. On Twitter, Nora aids HR professionals by creating flashcard type study sessions. Check out her page- http://twitter.com/PHRSPHR. There are also several LinkedIn groups made up of certified HR professionals who have been where you are. One in particular is PHR Linked- http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=96786&trk=myg_ugrp_ovr.

We also encourage you to begin a group by reaching out to other HR professionals right here on our blog, Certification Matters. This is exactly why we created a blog on our web site. We want you to be able to connect with other HR professionals and have the opportunity to gain knowledge from one other.

If you have not already done so, take a look at our new Assessment & Preparation section on our web site. You will find a wealth of information to assist you with preparing for our certification exam(s). After doing so, I would be interested in hearing what you think about the information being provided. As an individual who did not pass the exam and is working towards retesting, please also let me know what type of resources or information you feel the HR Certification Institute could provide to assist you in your endeavors.

I look forward to hearing back from you,

Hi - I'm fairly new to the HR field but it's definitely something that I am pursuing. My bachelor degree is in Business with emphasis in HR and I'm pursuing the same for my graduate degree. Being that I have the knowledge but not as much experience; would you recommend me taking the PHR certification? Would it help getting hired?

Thanks!

As long as you are within 12 months of graduating, you are eligible to take the exam and I definitely encourage it if you have the desire to break into the profession. Our Value of Certification study has shown that hiring managers actually take into account the certification status of an applicant and 1 out of 2 prefer that their exempt HR people have a certification.

I am preparing for the CA exam. After studying for a few weeks, I thought I would take an online assessment to see how well I know the material. I was able to access the 10 question quiz offered at no cost. However, I was disappointed to see that an online assessment is not available for this particular exam.
