PHR- and SPHR-certified professionals soon will be able to earn an HRCI certification to demonstrate their mastery of HR issues specific to California. Many California laws and compliance regulations are unique to the state, and the new certification will help identify professionals with related knowledge and skills. It’s expected to be of interest not only to HR professionals who practice in California, but to those who are based elsewhere and do business in the state.
The HRCI Board of Directors approved the California certification at its June meeting, and the first paper-and-pencil exam is slated for April 2007. As with all HRCI certifications, an extensive practice analysis study will establish the related body of knowledge, which will become the basis for the exam’s development. In this case, fast-track development is possible because the California State Council of SHRM has already completed extensive studies and because the body of knowledge has a more concentrated focus than for the comprehensive PHR and SPHR exams.
HRCI will be creating guidelines with criteria that must be met for consideration of any additional state-specific certifications.
