Departing Board Members’ Contributions Appreciated

Many thanks to Philip Way, PhD, SPHR; Joe Petrick, PhD, SPHR; Mary Rutland, SPHR and Gary Wheeler, SPHR, GPHR, CCP, CBP , who finish their terms on the HRCI Board of Directors in December. Here’s an overview of their contributions:

Philip Way, PhD, SPHR, immediate past chair, has served on the board since 1999 in various capacities including Area Exam Development Director and National Exam Development Director. Philip was instrumental in leading the effort to move the exam development process to a staff role. He also implemented the move from a nominating committee process to a process run by the governance committee. Philip has served on the finance committee; chaired the governance committee and spearheaded such areas as HR departmental accreditation, organizational accreditation, the development of a strategic business competency certification and international certification strategy development. His board leadership has resulted in more nimble and results-oriented decision making. Philip is Associate Professor and Director of the University Honors Scholars program at the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Joe Petrick, PhD, SPHR has been a director for three years, providing a strategic academic perspective to the board. He has served on committees that considered organization accreditation and departmental accreditation, as well as a task force focusing on the creation of an international strategy that includes developing a certification in China. Joe is professor of management at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.

Mary Rutland, SPHR has been a director for three years and formerly served on the HRCI item review panel and the practice analysis task force. She has been a very active volunteer leader in New Mexico at both the local and state levels. Mary is very much a cheerleader for certification and will certainly continue her efforts to speak about the importance and value of certification. Mary owns her own consulting firm, Human Resources by Mary Rutland in Albuquerque, N.M.

Gary Wheeler, SPHR, GPHR, CCP, CBP, has served on the board for four years–three as a director and one as a Regional Exam Development Director. Gary really encouraged and motivated the Eastern Item Writing Panel to generate high-quality, high-volume items. He also enjoyed sparking competition between the Eastern and Western panels. Gary has served on the finance committee, as well as several task forces that considered the addition of new certifications. Gary is President and CEO of Human Resource Business Partner Consultant, LLC in Sandy Springs, GA.
