HRCI's Pre-Approval Programs Benefit Professionals & Providers

Whether you seek or offer recertification credit, the HRCI Pre-Approval Programs offer distinct advantages. Read on to find out more!

For the Professional
Choosing an HRCI Pre-Approved offering takes the guesswork out of earning recertification credits. If the continuing education program you choose has been pre-approved by HRCI, you will earn the hours specified on the certificate of completion or indicated in the onsite program.

Here are some tips for making the most of the pre-approval programs.

  • Look for the HRCI Pre-Approved seal in materials that promote continuing education programs. When you see the seal, you know that you will earn the listed number of recertification credits.
  • Seek out an Approved Provider through the “Directory of Approved Providers” on HRCI.org. All HR-related activities offered by Approved Providers are approved for credit.
  • Encourage your SHRM chapter to seek Approved-for-Credit status for its qualifying continuing education programs.
  • Track and submit your recertification credits using “My Recert File” on the home page of HRCI.org. When you insert a pre-approved program number, fields detailing the program and credits fill in automatically. Check out the new Virtual Recertification Tour to see how it works.
  • Make sure you obtain and retain the completion certificate or the onsite program that indicates the program ID and number of hours earned. You may need this if HRCI later asks you to verify your participation.
  • Remember: programs do not have to be pre-approved to count for recertification credit. You’ll just have to verify the number of credits yourself.

For the Provider
The HRCI Approved-for-Credit and Approved Provider programs both offer distinct advantages for those who provide continuing education programs that qualify for recertification credit.

The HRCI Approved-for-Credit Program primarily serves those organizations that occasionally offer qualifying continuing education programs. Organizations apply and pay on a per-program basis. To find out more, see information detailed throughout the “Approved-for-Credit” section of HRCI.org.

Recognizing long-standing support for HRCI, there is no fee for SHRM chapters, state councils and affiliates to request pre-approval of a workshop or seminar. Related policies and procedures are detailed in the SHRM Affiliate Guidebook to Pre-Approved Recertification Credit, available in the “Approved-for-Credit” section of HRCI.org. Note that the guidelines are subject to the recently updated policies and procedures.

The HRCI Approved Provider Program serves organizations that offer significant and varied HR-related continuing education programs. The provider applies and pays on a three-year basis and is included in the “Directory of Approved Providers” on HRCI.org.

Complete information and a link to the online application are detailed in the “Approved Provider Program” section of HRCI.org.

Be on the lookout for an online searchable directory, which HRCI will launch in early March. Certificants will be able to search for qualifying pre-approved recertification events by date, location and sponsoring organization!
